We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/passengers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passengers<\/a> were forced to abandon their travel plans when a \u201ctechnical issue\u201d stopped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/flights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flights<\/a> across the UK taking off and landing for several hours.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/flights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flights<\/a> in and out of the country were cancelled, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/airports\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">airports<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/jersey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jersey<\/a> up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/aberdeen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aberdeen<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/heathrow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heathrow<\/a> and Gatwick, according to flight-monitoring website Flightradar24.<\/p>\n<p>About four hours after the disruption began, the National Air Traffic Services (Nats) announced the \u201csystem issue\u201d that caused the chaos had been resolved.<\/p>\n<p>But after another three hours, air-traffic chiefs admitted the recovery had taken longer than they had hoped \u2013 and the backlog of flights was expected to continue causing disruption into Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Transport secretary Heidi Alexander said she was seeking assurances that lessons would be learnt.<\/p>\n<p>Many passengers agreed. Fahima Khalil, who was kept waiting in Dusseldorf for more than four hours, told The Independent: \u201cIt is so frustrating and unacceptable for passengers to be left waiting for hours with so little information or proper support. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sincerely hope lessons will be learnt and that action will be taken to prevent British travellers from being put through similar situation again.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_4062-(1)-c35f2ada.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Airport terminals became crowded with passengers waiting for information\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Airport terminals became crowded with passengers waiting for information (Annabel Grossman\/The Independent)<\/p>\n<p>Ryanair called on the head of the National Air Traffic System to quit because the disruption followed a \u201ccatastrophic\u201d system collapse in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Irish airline said 65,000 of its passengers were hit by the glitch.<\/p>\n<p>Ryanair chief operating officer Neal McMahon said: \u201cHow many more failures do passengers have to suffer before Martin Rolfe accepts responsibility for repeated mismanagement and resigns?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver three years after Nats\u2019 catastrophic 2023 system meltdown, it\u2019s clear that nothing has changed, with UK passengers once again suffering avoidable delays of up to eight hours today due a critical system failing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wizz Air called for urgent reform of Nats. \u201cA critical national infrastructure provider should not repeatedly bring the aviation system to a standstill. Nats is simply not fit for purpose in its current form,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked on Sky News whether he accepted responsibility for the incident, Nats chief executive Martin Rolfe said: \u201cI always accept full responsibility\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI am the CEO of a piece of critical infrastructure, so it is my job to take responsibility for that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I absolutely take responsibility for is keeping people safe and delivering the best service we possibly can on a day like today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will understand my focus is entirely about how we actually resolve this issue, get things back to normal, help our airlines, our airport customers and the travelling public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/2293690084...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Delayed passengers at Terminal 3 of London Heathrow\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Delayed passengers at Terminal 3 of London Heathrow (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Last July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/nats-airlines-transport-secretary-government-ryanair-b2799517.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a \u201cradar-related issue\u201d caused a failure<\/a> that grounded flights across the UK, forcing the cancellation of more than 160 flights.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/inquiry-nats-louise-haigh-civil-aviation-authority-airlines-b2646943.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 700,000 passengers experienced disruption as flights were grounded<\/a> when Nats suffered a technical glitch.<\/p>\n<p>As well as Heathrow and Gatwick, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/london-city-airport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London City airport<\/a>, Southend, Stansted, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, East Midlands, Birmingham, Belfast, Liverpool and Jersey airports were all hit by the chaos.<\/p>\n<p>London City airport suffered the highest proportion of cancelled take-offs, according to aviation-analytics company Cirium.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers kept waiting at airports or on planes that were not moving complained they were not given information.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/2293684022...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The disruption affected tens of thousands of people\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The disruption affected tens of thousands of people (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>People on board a plane due to fly to New York that was delayed for five hours said they were hungry, frustrated and \u201cfreezing cold\u201d because the door was left open.<\/p>\n<p>Some inbound flights were also left sitting on the tarmac for hours after landing.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Ethan told The Independent his plane from Vancouver had been stationary for five hours, with elderly people and children on board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt what point does it become inhumane keeping passengers trapped on an aeroplane for that time after already travelling eight hours overnight?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption prevented at least one couple from going on honeymoon.<\/p>\n<p>Marco Marcucci and his wife, Beatrice, who were married in July, had been due to fly from Milan to San Francisco via Heathrow on Wednesday morning but the flight was cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Marcucci said his wife was angry as they had been planning their trip since February.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/2293687890...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Air traffic chiefs said the recovery had taken longer than they had hoped\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Air traffic chiefs said the recovery had taken longer than they had hoped (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>A British Airways plane from Heathrow to Shanghai turned around over Romania and then diverted to Cardiff, FlightRadar24 said.<\/p>\n<p>Air traffic chiefs said recovery had taken longer than they had hoped but the problem was resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Nats said: \u201cOur system issue is now resolved, we are operating normally and working as hard as possible to clear the backlog of flights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are truly sorry for the ongoing flight disruption.
