{"id":13139,"date":"2026-04-13T13:59:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T13:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/13139\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T13:59:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T13:59:20","slug":"farage-warns-boriswave-could-become-622bn-burden-on-britain-london-business-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/13139\/","title":{"rendered":"Farage warns \u2018Boriswave\u2019 could become \u00a3622bn burden on Britain &#8211; London Business News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigel Farage has warned on Monday that the legacy of mass migration under former prime minister Boris Johnson risks becoming a \u201ccatastrophic\u201d economic burden, as Reform UK launched a new inquiry into what it has dubbed the \u201cBoriswave\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a Westminster press conference, the Reform UK leader said there was still time to mitigate the long-term impact of high migration levels, but cautioned that the costs could weigh heavily on future generations if left unchecked.<\/p>\n<p>Farage accused the Conservatives of failing to deliver on repeated pledges to bring net migration down to the \u201ctens of thousands\u201d, arguing that policy had instead moved in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we all genuinely thought that Boris Johnson as Prime Minister might do something about it,\u201d he said. \u201cThe truth is, he did the opposite with the Boriswave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/nca-chief-warns-iran-war-could-bring-surge-of-illegal-migrant-crossings-to-uk\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"37368\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warned that if millions of migrants<\/a> who arrived during that period are granted indefinite leave to remain in the coming years, the fiscal consequences could be severe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf over a couple of <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/people-predicted-that-london-offices-were-dead-now-millions-are-pouring-back-into-the-sector\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"37372\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">million people<\/a> receive indefinite leave to remain over the next 18 months, we will be putting an economic millstone around our necks that will be catastrophic,\u201d he said, adding that Reform estimates the long-term cost could reach \u00a3622bn.<\/p>\n<p>At the same event, Reform\u2019s Home Affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf said the scale of migration between 2021 and 2024 had \u201cpermanently altered the fiscal trajectory\u201d of the country.<\/p>\n<p>He cited figures suggesting that 3.8 <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/azerion-successfully-issues-subsequent-bonds-in-an-amount-of-e50-million\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"37374\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">million long-term visas were issued<\/a> over that period, contributing to gross immigration of 4.8 million and net migration of 2.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>Yusuf argued that between 1.6 and 2.2 million migrants could soon become eligible for indefinite leave to remain, warning that the associated costs would \u201cexplode\u201d as individuals <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/experts-examine-the-impact-of-fan-questions-when-gaining-access-to-pre-sale-tickets\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"37369\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gain access<\/a> to public services and, eventually, citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>The intervention comes amid a broader political row over immigration policy, with <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/chancellor-urged-that-she-must-spark-investment-reform\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"37373\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reform urging<\/a> the Government not to reverse proposed changes to settlement rules.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/starmers-biggest-mistake-on-channel-crossings-revealed\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"37366\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keir Starmer<\/a> has indicated support for tightening aspects of the system.
