{"id":13523,"date":"2026-04-13T23:43:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T23:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/13523\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T23:43:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T23:43:12","slug":"roarsome-giant-replica-coin-unveiled-at-london-zoo-to-mark-200-years-of-zsl-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/13523\/","title":{"rendered":"Roarsome: Giant replica coin unveiled at London Zoo to mark 200 years of ZSL"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">A coin featuring a tiger, a snail and a dove has been launched to celebrate 200 years of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The \u00a32 coin carries the edge inscription \u201crestoring wildlife together\u201d and it was created by the Royal Mint in collaboration with ZSL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The coin was officially launched at ZSL\u2019s London Zoo, where a giant wooden replica of the coin measuring two metres (6.5ft) in size was given to the conservation zoo\u2019s Sumatran tigers for their \u201croar\u201d of approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The replica coin formed part of activities which stimulate an animal\u2019s natural instincts. For the tigers, this includes stalking and hunting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The reverse or \u201ctails\u201d design of the coin brings together three animals that the Mint said \u201ctell a powerful story about ZSL\u2019s conservation impact\u201d\u00a0\u2013 the Sumatran tiger, the Socorro dove, and the Partula snail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Each is depicted with fine detail, including the texture of the tiger\u2019s fur, the delicate feathers of the dove, and the ribbed surface of the snail\u2019s shell.<\/p>\n<p>    <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" creatures, in a nod to the wild habitats ZSL works to protect and restore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Lucy Mackenzie, director of digital and product concept at the Royal Mint, said: \u201cThis coin is so much more than a commemorative piece, it\u2019s a tribute to two centuries of dedication to wildlife and our planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cWe\u2019re proud to support ZSL, and alongside the keepers and conservationists who give so much of themselves to this work every day and to see the animals that inspired the design up close brought home just how meaningful this collaboration is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Founded in 1826 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles \u201cfor the advancement of zoological science,\u201d ZSL operates across more than 70 countries said: \u201cWe are delighted that ZSL\u2019s 200th anniversary is being commemorated with this special \u00a32 coin from the Royal Mint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cThe design, which highlights three of ZSL\u2019s remarkable conservation stories, reflects just a small part of the impact ZSL has made over the past two centuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cFrom pioneering scientific research to protecting and restoring species and habitats around the world, this recognition is a wonderful tribute to our enduring commitment to conservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The coin is available to purchase from the Royal Mint from 9am on Tuesday April 14, with prices starting from \u00a317.50 for a brilliant uncirculated version.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Gold and silver versions of the coin are also available, with a gold coin priced at \u00a32,505 and silver coins of different weights priced at \u00a3107.50 and \u00a3190.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">A portion of the net proceeds from sales will be donated to ZSL in support of the charity\u2019s global conservation work across the world, the Royal Mint said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">From May 1, visitors to the Royal Mint Experience, based in Llantrisant, south Wales will also be able to strike their own ZSL \u00a32
