Others turned to makeshift alternatives, with data showing 27% using tissues or cotton wool, and 6% using paper or newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>The survey revealed that period poverty is\u00a0excluding\u00a0some women\u00a0from\u00a0public life altogether. Almost a quarter of people who were unable to afford period products said they stayed at home as a result.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than a third (35%) of respondents said they had missed or avoided exercising as a result of being on their period in the last year. One in 10 avoided going into work, and a similar number missed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/behind-the-scenes\/big-issue-education-programme-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">school<\/a>, college or university. Nearly a quarter said they had avoided socialising.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners stress that no one should face barriers simply because of their period.<\/p>\n<p>Ruby\u00a0Raut,\u00a0founder and CEO of WUKA,\u00a0a reusable period underwear company, said:\u00a0\u201cI lived through period poverty myself over 20 years ago in Nepal, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0unacceptable that in 2026, this is still a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cAccess to period care is not a luxury;\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a fundamental right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advertising helps fund Big Issue\u2019s mission to end poverty<\/p>\n<p>Period poverty is not just being unable to afford period products,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0also about lacking access to\u00a0clean\u00a0water,\u00a0bathrooms,\u00a0and private spaces.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 400 million children worldwide lack decent toilets at school, according to data from the WHO and UNICEF, and 220 million have no toilet at all.
