{"id":13728,"date":"2026-04-14T07:53:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T07:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/13728\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T07:53:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T07:53:20","slug":"uk-in-peril-because-of-starmers-corrosive-complacency-on-defence-ex-nato-chief-lord-robertson-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/13728\/","title":{"rendered":"UK \u2018in peril\u2019 because of Starmer\u2019s \u2018corrosive complacency\u2019 on defence, ex-Nato chief Lord Robertson warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/viewFromWestminster1_1_new.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"View from Westminster\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Stay on top of the latest political news with our View from Westminster newsletterGet the latest political headlines with our free emailGet the latest political headlines with our free email<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/viewFromWestminster1_1_new.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"View from Westminster\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/trump-starmer-iran-strait-of-hormuz-blockade-us-war-b2957014.html\" title=\"Starmer refuses to back Trump\u2019s Strait of Hormuz blockade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sir Keir Starmer<\/a> has shown \u201ccorrosive complacency\u201d towards defence, a key government adviser has warned, saying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/british-army-armed-forces-richard-barrons-iran-war-b2945394.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UK\u2019s security<\/a> is \u201cin peril\u201d as a result. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/nato-government-lord-britain-b2957086.html\" title=\"Former Nato chief aims broadside at Government over defence funding\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lord George Robertson<\/a>, the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/iran-us-blockade-strait-of-hormuz-ceasefire-ships-b2956594.html\" title=\"US blockade of Iranian ports begins as Trump warns any ship that comes close will be eliminated\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nato<\/a> secretary general who was appointed by the prime minister to write the government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/defence-review-uk-strategic-spending-healey-russia-b2761342.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strategic Defence Review (SDR)<\/a>, will use a speech on Tuesday to accuse \u201cnon-military experts\u201d in the Treasury of \u201cvandalism\u201d and accuse Sir Keir of being unwilling \u201cto make the necessary investment\u201d in Britain\u2019s defence. <\/p>\n<p>The government has promised to publish a 10-year defence investment plan to fund the SDR, but it has been beset by repeat delays amid warnings that the military is facing a \u00a328bn black hole in its funding over the next four years.<\/p>\n<p>In a damning intervention, the Labour peer and former defence secretary will also take aim at Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s failure to tackle to the ballooning benefits bill, warning: &#8220;We cannot defend Britain with an ever-expanding welfare budget.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1204121249.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Former Nato Secretary General Lord George Robertson\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Former Nato Secretary General Lord George Robertson (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Amid escalating turbulence in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Lord Robertson will say: &#8220;We are underprepared. We are underinsured. We are under attack. We are not safe\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009Britain&#8217;s national security and safety is in peril.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Financial Times, he will add: &#8220;There is a corrosive complacency today in Britain&#8217;s political leadership. Lip service is paid to the risks, the threats, the bright red signals of danger &#8211; but even a promised national conversation about defence can&#8217;t be started.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme, another one of the SDR\u2019s authors General Sir Richard Barrons agreed with Lord Robertson that &#8220;there&#8217;s an enormous gap between where we have to be to keep the country safe in the world we now live in and where we actually are&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He had earlier warned that the military is so depleted it could only \u201cseize a small market town on a good day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The government has committed to spend 2.5 per cent of gross domestic product on defence by 2027, increasing to 3 per cent in the next parliament and a Nato-agreed target of 3.5 per cent by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir told MPs on Monday that the government is working to finalise the defence investment plan but he did not want to repeat the mistakes of previous administrations because \u201cwe inherited plans that were unfunded and not deliverable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Robertson\u2019s intervention comes just days after former defence secretary Ben Wallace accused ministers of \u201ctaking the public for fools\u201d after the current defence secretary John Healey insisted the UK is ready to defend itself.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-2161618125.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Sir Keir Starmer has come under fire for failing to prioritise defence\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Sir Keir Starmer has come under fire for failing to prioritise defence (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is they simply will not make the tough political decisions&#8230;
