SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn said Scotland\u2019s energy should be in Scotland\u2019s hands (PA) \u00b7 Jane Barlow <\/p>\nUS president Donald Trump has said \u201cAberdeen should be booming\u201d as he said the UK Government is \u201cabsolutely crazy\u201d not to boost oil and gas extraction in the North Sea.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump took to his Truth Social page on Tuesday to criticise UK policy in the basin, with the Labour-led Government moving towards renewable energy.<\/p>\n
In the seemingly unprompted post, the US leader said: \u201cEurope is desperate for Energy, and yet the United Kingdom refuses to open North Sea Oil, one of the greatest fields in the World. Tragic!!!<\/p>\n
\u201cAberdeen should be booming. Norway sells its North Sea Oil to the U.K. at double the price. They are making a fortune. U.K., which is better situated on the North Sea for purposes of energy than Norway, should, DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!!<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is absolutely crazy that they don\u2019t\u2026 AND, NO MORE WINDMILLS!\u201d<\/p>\n
The US president has long voiced his dislike of wind energy, particularly offshore wind, having launched a battle with the Scottish Government to stop a development which was visible from his Aberdeenshire golf course.<\/p>\n
His comments are the latest in a line of outbursts about the UK\u2019s energy policy, including a Truth Social post where he urged the Government to \u201cincentivise the drillers\u201d.<\/p>\n
Stephen Flynn, the SNP\u2019s Westminster leader, said: \u201cScotland\u2019s energy should be in Scotland\u2019s hands and it is not for Donald Trump or anyone else to tell us what to do with it.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor too long has our natural resources been asset stripped and used as a cash cow by Westminster with no benefit to the people of Scotland \u2013 that has been crystallised by events in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pay through the nose for petrol and through the teeth to heat our homes despite being an energy rich country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe solution to that is not the extreme position advocated by Trump, it is to give us the power to protect our oil industry of today and create the renewables jobs of tomorrow \u2013 that\u2019s how you bring down bills, drive forward our economy and ensure our energy security.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat only happens through an SNP majority and the fresh start of independence \u2013 that\u2019s what\u2019s on the ballot in May.\u201d<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the UK Government\u2019s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said: \u201cWe are taking action to bear down on the cost of living, including taking \u00a3117 off average energy bills this month and supporting de-escalation in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
