Tragic!!!\u201d Trump wrote on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">\u201dU.K., which is better situated on the North Sea for purposes of energy than Norway, should, DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!! It is absolutely crazy that they don\u2019t\u2026 AND, NO MORE WINDMILLS!\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The energy shock from the Iran war is expected to hit the U.K. the hardest compared to other rich economies, according to a recent forecast from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/news\/articles\/2026\/04\/14\/tr-04142026-press-briefing-transcript-world-economic-outlook-spring-meetings-2026\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IMF<\/a>. The European Union has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/boards-policy-regulation\/eu-warns-prolonged-energy-shock-forced-cuts-if-iran-war-continues-2026-04-15\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warned<\/a> member states that the region could face prolonged energy shocks if the conflict continues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What is the U.K.&#8217;s stance on drilling North Sea oil and gas?<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Last year, the U.K. banned new licenses for oil and gas fields in the North Sea as part of its commitment to reach its net-zero emissions targets. Oil and gas currently meets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/energy\/article\/uk-urgently-needs-more-oil-gas-from-north-sea-x570nr8xj\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">75%<\/a> of the country\u2019s energy needs. The government has been facing mounting pressure to reverse the ban following the breakout of the war in Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The Conservative Party and Reform U.K., a right-leaning party, have both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5059e45b-3a3c-4cf4-8b44-6cadc92e8422?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">called<\/a> for increased domestic production, arguing it would bolster energy security, support jobs, and lower bills.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">But even if the U.K. were to ramp up production now, the impact wouldn\u2019t be felt for some time. Between 2010 and 2024, the government approved hundreds of new North Sea oil and gas licenses in seven licensing rounds, which to date have only produced the equivalent of 36 days of extra gas, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/mar\/28\/north-sea-oil-gas-licences-conservatives\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research<\/a> by the energy consultancy Voar and the campaign group Uplift.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">\u201cIf you drill today, you&#8217;re not going to see the oil in a very long time, because it takes several years to explore, find the oil, start a new oil field, and produce,\u201d says Daniela Schmidt, professor of earth science at the University of Bristol.<\/p>\n<p>Who owns most of the North Sea oil?<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The U.K. is the second-largest driller in the North Sea behind Norway. But while Norway has a majority state-owned energy company, the U.K. licenses out new oil and gas projects to private companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">\u201c[The oil] isn&#8217;t owned in most cases\u2014and that includes the U.S. and the U.K.\u2014by the people. So it will not reduce oil prices, because it is to the benefit of the big producers, Exxon, Shell, BP, they will have more oil, and they will make more money,\u201d says Schmidt. The price of gas is also set on international markets in the U.K., another reason why more drilling wouldn\u2019t necessarily lower prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How much oil is still left in the North Sea?<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The North Sea is considered a \u201cmature basin,\u201d which means that much of the resources it contains have been extracted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">For both oil and gas, it\u2019s estimated that 93% of the anticipated total amount of oil and gas that could be extracted up until 2050 has already been removed, according to research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/eciu.net\/media\/press-releases\/around-90-of-uk-north-sea-oil-and-gas-already-drained-dry-analysis\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Energy &amp; Climate Intelligence Unit<\/a>, a U.K. based non-profit climate research group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">While Norway has only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/factcheck-nine-false-or-misleading-myths-about-north-sea-oil-and-gas\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">used<\/a> up 57% of the \u201cexpected recoverable resource\u201d from the part of the North Sea it has sovereignty over, the U.K. has already used up the large majority of its North Sea resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">\u201cThe production has peaked,\u201d says Schmidt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What is the climate impact of North Sea oil?<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Offshore drilling can have destructive impacts on oceans and coastal communities, generating pollution and harming wildlife.
