The number of international students has been around 2,000 in recent years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But crucially, university management is also looking forward and predicting continued difficulties attracting international students in the future due to government policies and \u201cmarket conditions\u201d, which likely will curb \u201cincome diversification opportunities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cRedundancies across the higher education sector have become unavoidable,\u201d a UU spokesperson said. \u201cTo date, more than 100 institutions across the UK have downsized their staffing complement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Management is hoping the redundancy scheme will be entirely voluntary.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"There are fears a drastic loss of income from international students will leave a hole in university budgets \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ME5VN4CCCNNJZJNMTJTALUCNIU.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Ulster University international student revenue has dropped by millions  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cUlster University has sought to hold off on making redundancies while continuing to work with the Department for the Economy, through their reviews, on possible changes to the HE funding model in Northern Ireland,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt has recently been made clear to us that a sustainable funding model is not going to be forthcoming, and regretfully, we must now act to reduce our costs.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">As the number of international students has dropped, the number from the north paying far less in tuition fees has increased. Students from the Republic are regarded as being from \u201chome\u201d while those from Britain paid fees of \u00a39,535 in 2025\/26.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The university, in its accounts, also blamed the rise in national insurance costs and government grants failing to keep pace with inflation for its financial difficulties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ulster University has approximately 21,000 undergraduates at its campuses in Belfast, Coleraine and Derry, with just under 12,000 enrolled at postgraduate level in 24\/25. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It reported a total income of \u00a3304m in 2025, up from \u00a3293m the previous year, largely due to increases in government and research grants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Wages and salaries increased from \u00a3128m to \u00a3140m over the year. The total for 2025, with pensions and social security included, was \u00a3175m.
