{"id":17239,"date":"2026-04-19T16:19:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T16:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/17239\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T16:19:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T16:19:14","slug":"cheap-tariff-free-imports-to-the-uk-double-to-8-billion-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/17239\/","title":{"rendered":"Cheap tariff-free imports to the UK double to \u00a38 billion \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Forced-labor fears<\/p>\n<p>Where the goods are coming from, however, isn\u2019t clear, as importers are \u201centitled to bulk declare multiple consignments on this declaration without providing the country of origin,\u201d HMRC information officers said.<\/p>\n<p>Individual parcel\u2011level data is rare since multiple consignments can be included in a single declaration.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of insight raises alarms about forced labor for David Alton, chair of the U.K. parliament&#8217;s Joint Committee on Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s inability to track the country of origin \u201cis at odds with its international and domestic commitments to remove forced labour from U.K. supply chains, particularly following the growing expansion of air cargo routes between Xinjiang and the U.K.,\u201d Alton said.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting by POLITICO in collaboration with the Washington advocacy group, Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/china-new-air-silk-road-tons-goods-xinjiang-europe-uyghur-us-uk-forced-labour-trade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">showed last year that over 40 freight routes<\/a> now connect the U.K. and Europe to airports in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>Those trade links delivering mostly low-value e-commerce imports continue to grow.
