{"id":18674,"date":"2026-04-21T12:37:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T12:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/18674\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T12:37:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T12:37:09","slug":"faith-leaders-urge-uk-to-continue-its-climate-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/18674\/","title":{"rendered":"Faith leaders urge UK to continue its climate leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Quakers in Britain has joined an interfaith coalition calling on the UK government to step up international efforts to encourage the phasing out of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Four people holding a letter in front of a government department\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/W1siZiIsIjIwMjYvMDQvMjEvMTIvMjAvNTAvMTAwZjg4NWUtODk1Zi00ZTA3LThmYTYtY2FiYjFlOWEyZTY5L1JhY2tNdWx0aXBh.jpeg\"\/><br \/>\nQuakers in Britain has joined an interfaith coalition calling on the UK government to step up international efforts to encourage the phasing out of fossil fuels, photo credit: Melanie Nazareth for Christian Climate Action<\/p>\n<p>More than two dozen senior faith leaders signed an open letter asking Ed Miliband, as Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero, to personally attend a landmark climate conference.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/linkprotect.cudasvc.com\/url?a=https%3a%2f%2ftransitionawayconference.com%2f&amp;c=E,1,E1IOBwWuLYIh784ndaA2GdTjH5kUflz6gnj0OuAmXOn0OCIsOChrIA1Cgqy8OvYR2UWnJwO63ceHpkRRwhpTjxWuiA6Ncima0ABf94SOjdTYKbP8&amp;typo=1\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/transitionawayconference.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels<\/a> to be held in Colombia later this month has wide support amongst climate leaders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/linkprotect.cudasvc.com\/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fenvironmentaldefence.ca%2f2025%2f11%2f21%2fstatement-global-climate-leaders-push-for-action-on-phasing-out-fossil-fuels-at-cop30%2f&amp;c=E,1,9LaNbQlrKmngA5zeOkvb7IMqVEjwIRB3DgHY1QDPPbWYRm2GmlR1cAydcERhYNQg_fFJzcEuvIKX2k4C9AMPbsy6ycB5COBmHpIvpXgDRrdp&amp;typo=1\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/environmentaldefence.ca\/2025\/11\/21\/statement-global-climate-leaders-push-for-action-on-phasing-out-fossil-fuels-at-cop30\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">This includes<\/a> small island states especially at risk from climate change, such as Fiji and Jamaica, as well as close European allies of the UK, such as Spain and Austria.<\/p>\n<p>Several nations attending are major fossil fuel producers, including Colombia itself, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/linkprotect.cudasvc.com\/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.climatechangenews.com%2f2026%2f03%2f31%2fmajor-oil-producers-among-46-nations-joining-fossil-fuel-phase-out-summit%2f&amp;c=E,1,HCqT0EQojotFK6TOhX3YNxitc3z6Zww3uQmwTfrHRRwDQTDv5_3_cGalO2pljBJ_UkFD5D5KcSUpEBHpvI-RLyjgZIGQQU1x0f9W_7WuLcPY&amp;typo=1\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2026\/03\/31\/major-oil-producers-among-46-nations-joining-fossil-fuel-phase-out-summit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Canada, Brazil and Norway.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Opportunity to show climate leadership<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn light of the ongoing energy crisis, this conference is vital for developing energy security and access for the UK and our allies, and a key opportunity for the UK to demonstrate its climate leadership,&#8221; the letter says.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Parker, recording clerk for Quakers in Britain, is among the signatories who also include representatives of the Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Anglican, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu communities. <\/p>\n<p>It calls on the UK to commit its fair share of funding for a transition that is &#8220;fast, fair, and funded.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ed Miliband himself observed last autumn that: \u201cWe are up against the march of time and massive global forces that would slow down or stop action. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the face of this opposition, multilateralism is our best hope.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The faith leaders wrote: \u201cYour words encouraged us [&#8230;and] we encourage you to put them into action with fellow climate leaders in Santa Marta.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Signatories wrote: &#8220;It is love that compels us,&#8221;
