{"id":19162,"date":"2026-04-22T04:25:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T04:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/19162\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T04:25:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T04:25:18","slug":"uk-to-permanently-ban-future-generations-from-buying-cigarettes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/19162\/","title":{"rendered":"UK to permanently ban future generations from buying cigarettes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK is <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/20\/lifestyle\/cigarettes-are-back-hollywood-is-pushing-a-new-generation-to-light-up-from-coast-to-coast\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set to bar anyone born<\/a> after 2008 from ever buying cigarettes as part of a push to make future generations completely smoke-free.<\/p>\n<p>The United Kingdom\u2019s Tobacco and Vapes Bill was passed by Parliament on Monday and is set to soon be signed into law by King Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Once it takes effect in January 2027, anybody currently 17 and under \u2014 or born after Jan. 1, 2009 \u2014 will be banned from buying cigarettes, cigars or tobacco in the future, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn08jy6w0l5o\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39153709\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/person-smoking-cigarette-outdoors-pub-126109509.jpg\" alt=\"A person holds a lighted cigarette next to a beer glass and ashtray at an outdoor pub table.\" class=\"wp-image-39153709\"  \/>Upcoming generations in the UK will forever be banned from buying cigarettes under legislation that passed Parliament this week. PA Images via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The bill ensures <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/15\/us-news\/ohio-man-swallows-lit-cigarette-on-live-tv-in-bizarre-video\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that by raising the UK\u2019s legal limit to purchase<\/a> tobacco products \u2014 currently 18 \u2014 by one year every year from here on out, effectively blocking future generations from buying them forever.<\/p>\n<p>Smoking itself will still be legal. It remains unclear whether older people will be able to give cigarettes to the younger generation that falls under the ban.<\/p>\n<p>UK lawmakers said they are hopeful the \u201clandmark\u201d legislation will create a \u201csmoke-free generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a landmark bill, my lords, it will create a smoke-free generation,\u201d said Health Minister Baroness Gillian Merron. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is, in fact, the biggest public health intervention in a generation, and I can assure all noble Lords that it will save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ban will apply to every country in the UK: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>It has been in the works since 2024 and is one of the first of its kind in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The Maldives islands in the Indian Ocean have a similar ban, while New Zealand became the first country to pass such a bill in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39153706\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2024-london-united-kingdom-smoking-126109517.jpg\" alt=\"Cigarette butts in an ashtray on a recycling bin.\" class=\"wp-image-39153706\"  \/>The legislation is intended to make the future UK generations completely smoke-free in coming years.
