The recent fall in the UK\u2019s headline unemployment rate is being driven not by a stronger jobs market, but by more people dropping out of the workforce altogether, according to analysts.<\/p>\n
Robert Salter, a director at Blick Rothenberg, said the drop to 4.9% recorded by the Office for National Statistics reflects a rise in economic inactivity rather than a genuine improvement in employment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fall in the unemployment rate\u2026 is driven by people \u2018opting out\u2019 of the job market and no longer actively seeking work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Instead of being counted as unemployed, many individuals are now classed as \u201ceconomically inactive\u201d, with the inactivity rate rising<\/a> from 20.7% to 21% over the latest quarter.<\/p>\n Mr Salter pointed to a notable shift among students, with fewer seeking work<\/a> alongside their studies. However, he warned that this trend is unlikely to last, with around 800,000 students expected to graduate from UK universities each year and re-enter the labour market<\/a> in the coming months.<\/p>\n \u201cAny fall in economic<\/a> inactivity is therefore likely to be purely temporary,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Those graduates are set to enter what he described as a \u201cquite weak\u201d jobs market<\/a>, with vacancies continuing to decline. The number of available roles has fallen to 711,000 \u2014 down by around 130,000 over the past 18 months<\/a>.<\/p>\n Mr Salter also cautioned that the latest figures largely predate the economic shock stemming from the ongoing Gulf conflict, which has pushed up oil prices and added fresh uncertainty for employers<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThis will have impacted the job<\/a> market,\u201d he said, warning that conditions are likely to remain challenging, particularly for new entrants such as graduates and school leavers.<\/p>\n
