{"id":19928,"date":"2026-04-23T00:06:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T00:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/19928\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T00:06:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T00:06:09","slug":"london-local-elections-2026-who-will-win-in-croydon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/19928\/","title":{"rendered":"London Local Elections 2026: Who will win in Croydon?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tThursday 23 April 2026 1:00 am<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0|\u00a0\u00a0Updated:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tWednesday 22 April 2026 3:18 pm\n\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/london-voting-1-1.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Voters casting ballots at a polling station in London during a local election, with people waiting in line.\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tCity AM is previewing local election votes taking place in every London borough.\t<\/p>\n<p>Voters are heading to the polls in the Labour-Conservative marginal borough of Croydon, following multiple Council bankruptcies, an increasingly split electoral map, and a hike in council tax.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In its last set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/people-and-organizations\/local-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">local elections<\/a> in 2022, Croydon was a rare London local authority with an almost dead-heat between Labour and Conservatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both parties ended up in a draw last time with 34 seats, alongside two Green councillors and one Lib Dem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No single party currently has overall control of the council.<\/p>\n<p>In the race for mayor, Conservative candidate Jason Perry edged out Labour by just 589 votes, in the first election for the role after being brought in by a referendum in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There will be fresh mayoral elections in May, alongside contests for local councillors in each ward in Croydon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the Greens and Reform both emerging since the last election as major electoral forces in London local politics, it is tricky to see any one party picking up majority control.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Croydon has four MPs, three Labour and one Conservative. Among them is housing and communities secretary and staunch Starmer ally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/people-and-organizations\/steve-reed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Steve Reed<\/a>, and shadow home secretary Chris Philp.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both of these MPs are closely associated with their respective party leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/london-elections-labour-reform-greens-conservatives-liberal-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">London local elections 2026: Who will win?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\tCroydon Council forced into major cost cuttings<\/p>\n<p>And these elections come during a torrid time for Croydon Council, which has gone bankrupt five times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/croydon-council-files-for-bankruptcy-amid-covid-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">since 2020<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, council tax is expected to rise by \u00a3119 for the average Band D property.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Back in July last year, the local government minister Jim McMahon called in a government team to take control of the council.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said that the decision was forced by \u201cthe failure of the council to adequately respond to these difficulties\u201d, whilst the mayor Jason Perry said that the move was \u201cthe wrong decision for Croydon and its residents\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In October, auditors issued a statutory recommendation \u2013 a kind of formal warning \u2013 to \u201curgently\u201d save money.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The council has made progress with savings in the 2025 financial year, with the local authority saying that it is on track to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.croydon.gov.uk\/croydon-reduces-request-for-government-support-in-2026-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">cut costs by more than \u00a348m<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Croydon Council has reduced its request for government support from \u00a3153m to \u00a3119m as part of the council funding redistribution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>City AM is previewing local election votes taking place in every London borough. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/london-elections-labour-reform-greens-conservatives-liberal-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Click here<\/a> for a full overview of May 7.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/teachers-to-be-asked-by-tory-councillors-to-ban-smartphones-in-classrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tory councillors pledge to ban smartphones in classrooms ahead of local elections<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tSimilarly tagged content: <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSections\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCategories\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPeople &amp;
