Photo credit should read: Jamie Lashmar\/PA Wire\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tPolice called the actions of protesters abusing officers \u2018shameful\u2019 (Picture: PA)<\/p>\n<p>Clashes that saw eggs and beer cans thrown at police during a protest over a disputed rape investigation have been condemned as \u2018shameful\u2019 by local authorities.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/surrey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Surrey<\/a> police and <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/crime-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crime<\/a> commissioner Lisa Townsend said some of those involved in the unrest in\u00a0Epsom\u00a0on Monday had travelled from elsewhere to cause trouble, and warned them to stay away.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The mindless scenes we witnessed last night, where our police officers were targeted with missiles, were nothing short of shameful,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I am a firm believer in people\u2019s right to lawful protest, but sadly, some of those present in\u00a0Epsom\u00a0yesterday stepped way beyond that line, and the type of behaviour we witnessed will not be tolerated.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Four people were arrested after the items were thrown at police in riot gear on Monday evening, and one man appeared to try to climb on top of a police van.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SEI_293967875-c78d.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28080065\" alt=\"Grab from PA video of police officers in Epsom as four people have been arrested during a protest in Epsom after police said there is no evidence that immigrants or asylum seekers were involved in an alleged rape outside a church. Photo credit should read: Jamie Lashmar\/PA Wire\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tPolice tried to calm down the fiery protests this week (Picture: PA)<\/p>\n<p>It was the second protest in the town after a woman reported being raped near a church in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, after leaving Labyrinth\u00a0Epsom\u00a0nightclub.<\/p>\n<p>There was some public anger that the force had not released the ethnicity of any suspects, but Surrey Police said this was because \u2018the information about the incident and potential suspects is so limited\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The force has repeatedly said there is no evidence to suggest immigrants or asylum seekers were involved in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Townsend added: \u2018I have been kept updated by senior officers and I know how painstaking and extensive the inquiries have been over the last week to establish the full facts of what happened in this case.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I fully appreciate in circumstances like this that the local community are keen to have as much information as possible, particularly when the report made is of such a concerning nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Surrey Police has said there is no evidence this case involves asylum seekers or immigrants.
