A man has died following a fire in the emergency department of a Belfast hospital.<\/p>\n
Emergency services responded to a fire at the Royal Victoria Hospital<\/a> on Wednesday evening after a blaze broke out inside a bathroom.<\/p>\n Police, <\/a>ambulance and fire crews arrived on the scene shortly before 6.45pm to tackle the fire in the accident and emergency (A&E) unit of the hospital.<\/p>\n READ MORE: Firefighters tackle bathroom blaze inside Belfast hospital\u2019s emergency department<\/a>READ MORE: Man killed in early-morning collision with bus near Dublin Airport<\/a><\/p>\n Reports said a man was injured following a fire in the toilets of the ED and was being treated for burns. He has since died in hospital.<\/p>\n In an update on Thursday, a PSNI<\/a> spokesperson said: “Police and fire crews were called to the Emergency Department of the Royal Victoria Hospital on Wednesday, 22nd April, at around 6.50pm.<\/p>\n “A man in his 30s has since passed away in hospital. This is being treated as a sudden death and not suspicious at this time.”<\/p>\n Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> West Belfast MP Paul Maskey expressed his condolences following the incident.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cI am deeply shocked and saddened to learn that a man has lost his life following a fire in the Royal Victoria Hospital.\u201cMy thoughts go out to the man\u2019s family and friends who will be left devastated and heartbroken by this tragedy. I want to thank the emergency services for all their work at the scene.”<\/p>\n A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS<\/a>) said: “The thoughts and sympathies of Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service are with the loved ones of a man who died following a fire at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.<\/p>\n “Firefighters were called to reports of a fire at 6.43pm yesterday (Wednesday 22 April 2026). Two Appliances from Springfield Fire Station, 1 Appliance from Central Fire Station, 1 Appliance from Cadogan Fire Station and 1 Appliance from Whitla Fire Station attended the incident.<\/p>\n “The fire was extinguished prior to NIFRS arrival. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus ventilated the premises and used gas monitors to ensure readings were normal.
