{"id":21468,"date":"2026-04-24T17:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T17:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/21468\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T17:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T17:56:09","slug":"japanese-champion-sumo-wrestler-receives-freedom-of-the-city-of-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/21468\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese champion sumo wrestler receives Freedom of the City of London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 City pays tribute to revered Japanese professional sumo wrestler and six-time appointed Chairman of Japanese Sumo Association<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nobuyoshi Hakkaku \u201cvery honoured to receive Freedom\u201d, on behalf of all sumo wrestlers and members of the Japanese Sumo Association<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mr Hakkaku recalls heartfelt welcome by Londoners at sumo tournaments and \u201cbeing engulfed by their warm cheers\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nobuyoshi Hakkaku, Chairman of the Japanese Sumo Association, has received the Freedom of the City of London, in recognition of his significant achievements in participating in, and contribution to promoting, the ancient sport.<\/p>\n<p>Born Nobuyoshi Hoshi in Hokkaid\u014d in 1963, Nobuyoshi Hakkaku attained the highest rank and became the 61st Yokozuna \u201cHokutoumi\u201d during his active years as a rikishi (professional sumo wrestler).<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his 13-year career spanning from 1979 to 1992, Mr Hakkaku won eight Makuuchi (top division) championships. He was appointed chairman of Nihon Sumo Kyokai (Japan Sumo Association) in December 2015 and was reappointed in March this year to his sixth term.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hakkaku was nominated for the Freedom by former Lord Mayor of the City of London, Professor Michael Mainelli, and Laura Dobbie Miller, the City of London Corporation\u2019s Clerk of the Chamberlain\u2019s Court. He attended his ceremony at the City Corporation\u2019s Guildhall headquarters this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after his Freedom ceremony, Nobuyoshi Hakkaku said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very honoured to receive the Freedom of the City of London, on behalf of the\u00a0rikishi\u00a0and members of the Japan Sumo Association, because it is not an individual accomplishment, and owes much to everyone\u2019s contributions to sustain the Japanese traditions and culture of Grand Sumo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a Yokozuna when I participated in the 1991 London Basho and in 2025, I returned as the Chairman of the Japan Sumo Association, and I am grateful to have had two opportunities to further our ties and understandings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn each occasion, I have wonderful memories of being welcomed by Londoners and being engulfed by their warm cheers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLondon sustains their heritage and tradition, and I feel that this is very similar to our values, especially, Royal Albert Hall\u2019s legacy is a model example for the Japanese Ryogoku Kokugikan (Sumo Arena).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Michael Mainelli said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City of London Corporation treasures its relationship with Japan \u2013 from hosting His Majesty The Emperor of Japan for a State Banquet at Guildhall in June 2024 to its work with Japan\u2019s financial and professional services communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a personal level, as a sumo fan myself and mindful that four generations of my family have lived in Japan, I have been particularly delighted to welcome Chairman Hakkaku to Guildhall for his admission to the Freedom of the City of London.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>City of London Corporation Policy Chairman, Chris Hayward, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Freedom of the City of London can be offered to individuals to recognise their outstanding talent or expertise in their chosen field and, as a much respected and revered figure in the sumo arena, Nobuyoshi Hakkaku has it in abundance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted to send my congratulations to Chairman Hakkaku on being admitted into the Freedom, and hope that he will have happy memories of the ceremony for many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the City of London\u2019s ancient traditions, the Freedom is believed to have begun in 1237 and enabled recipients to carry out their trade.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being nominated for, or applying for, the Freedom, it is also offered by the City of London Corporation to individuals as a way of paying tribute to their outstanding contribution to London or public life, or to celebrate a very significant achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Recent notable recipients include best-selling novelist, Ken Follett; artist and President of the Royal Academy of Arts, Rebecca Salter; two-time Academy Award-winning actor and humanitarian, Cate Blanchett; and mental health campaigner and former professional heavyweight boxer, Frank Bruno.<\/p>\n<p>ENDS\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                    &#8216;;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 City pays tribute to revered Japanese professional sumo wrestler and six-time appointed Chairman of Japanese Sumo Association&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":21469,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[616,27,18],"class_list":{"0":"post-21468","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-london","8":"tag-city-of-london","9":"tag-london","10":"tag-news"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@UnitedKingdom\/116460977041037893","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21468","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=21468"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21468\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/21469"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=21468"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=21468"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=21468"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
