{"id":21613,"date":"2026-04-24T23:50:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T23:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/21613\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T23:50:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T23:50:35","slug":"uk-palestine-action-activist-tells-court-his-sledgehammer-attack-on-officer-was-reasonable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/21613\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Palestine Action activist tells court his sledgehammer attack on officer was &#8216;reasonable&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A member of the British group Palestine Action told a court on Thursday that he believed it was \u201creasonable\u201d to strike a police officer with a sledgehammer during a 2024 attack on an Israeli defense firm\u2019s UK factory<\/p>\n<p>Six members of the anti-Israel group are being retried after a jury <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/palestine-action-activists-to-face-retrial-over-uk-elbit-factory-raid-following-backlash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acquitted them<\/a> of aggravated burglary earlier this year but wasn\u2019t able to reach verdicts on several key charges, including criminal damage and violent disorder.<\/p>\n<p>One of the defendants, Samuel Corner, 23, was called to testify on Thursday and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.com\/news\/article-15759603\/Palestine-Action-activist-court-police-sledgehammer.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the court that he hit the officer with a sledgehammer after hearing \u201csomeone screaming\u201d and fearing that one of his fellow activists was being hurt by security personnel.<\/p>\n<p>The officer suffered a fractured spine from the attack and remains on restricted duty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seemed reasonable to do something, and I had to act quickly,\u201d Corner reportedly told the court. Taken from social media)<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, the court\u2019s public gallery was filled with supporters of the defendants, some of whom wore keffiyeh scarves. Three pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested outside the court.<\/p>\n<p>The August 2024 raid, which prosecutors said caused about 1 million pounds ($1.4 million) in damages, took place around 10 months into the Gaza war triggered by Hamas\u2019s October 7 terror onslaught.<\/p>\n<p>The initial verdict on the raid drew criticism from police, lawmakers and Jewish communal groups. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/palestine-action-activists-to-face-retrial-over-uk-elbit-factory-raid-following-backlash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retrial<\/a> concerns the charges of criminal damage and violent disorder.<\/p>\n<p>The retrial is expected to continue next week.<\/p>\n<p>Palestine Action was banned in the UK in July 2025 after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base and vandalized aircraft in protest of Britain\u2019s military support for Israel.
