East Midlands Railway (EMR) has introduced brand-new station guides designed to make information both clearer and more accessible for passengers of all abilities.<\/p>\n

The guides utilise simple language alongside Widgit, a system of symbol-based communication developed to empower individuals to navigate environments independently.<\/p>\n

Thus far, Widgit has been used by educators, therapists and caregivers to support inclusive communication and understanding. Each symbol represents a word or concept, and can be paired to create a visual sign or sentence.<\/p>\n

The new guides are aimed at autistic people, individuals with additional needs, or anyone with a communication challenge who might become anxious when travelling. They provide key information about EMR stations, including the location of entrances, exits, ticket facilities, platforms, step-free access, and where customers can get help from staff.<\/p>\n

Philippa Cresswell, Customer Experience Director at East Midlands Railway, said:<\/p>\n

We want rail travel to be accessible and welcoming for everyone.<\/p>\n

These new Symbol-Friendly Station Guides are a practical step forward, helping customers better understand our stations and travel with greater confidence.<\/p>\n
