The King ended the first day of his much-anticipated state visit to the United States by chatting to former Olympic diving champion Tom Daley about their shared love of knitting.<\/p>\n

Charles met the retired star during a Washington garden party on Monday, where Camilla spoke to leading figures from domestic abuse charities and in a lighter moment confessed to feeling \u201cjet lagged\u201d.<\/p>\n

The garden party came ahead of the King\u2019s address to both houses of Congress on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Among the guests were treasury secretary Scott Bessent, senator Ted Cruz, former speaker Nancy Pelosi, current speaker of the souse Mike Johnson and Prince William\u2019s school friend Guy Pelly.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cKnitting is my outlet for all my creativity, my mindfulness and my meditation and the King has tried knitting many a time.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said he tried knitting when he was eight and he wasn\u2019t very good but he said he might pick it back up \u2013 he knows it\u2019s very good for mental health.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I want to try and get it back into the school curriculum and maybe he can help me do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The King’s address, scheduled to begin at \u200b3\u2060pm EDT (8pm BST), will be only the second by a British sovereign to the US Congress, after his mother Queen Elizabeth II spoke to both houses in 1991. <\/p>\n

It is a central \u2060event of the state visit \u2013 the most high-profile of Charles’ reign \u2013 and will be followed by \u200ba \u2060state dinner on Tuesday night. <\/p>\n

The King\u2019s speech is \u200cexpected to last about 20 minutes, a palace source said, and touch on issues including Nato, the Middle East and Ukraine. While written with inputs and advice from the government, much of the language \u200cand tone comes from Charles himself, the source said. <\/p>\n
