When Merfyn Williams, universally known as Taff, first stepped aboard a bus in St Helens back in April 1966, Harold Wilson occupied Number 10, England was gearing up to host the World Cup, and the internet remained decades from invention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Six decades on, Taff continues to drive for Arriva Merseyside aged 81, with the company suggesting he may well be the oldest working bus driver in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Originally from <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/all-about\/colwyn-bay\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Colwyn Bay<\/a>, which explains his enduring nickname, Taff relocated to St Helens in 1966 following his meeting with wife Ann and has remained there ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Every single year of his 60-year career has been spent at the same St Helens depot, where colleagues describe him as being &#8220;part of the fabric&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He told the ECHO: &#8220;My mother-in-law was a bus conductor and she said, &#8216;Why don&#8217;t you try the buses?&#8217; and the rest is history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Taff began his career as a &#8216;clippy&#8217; (a bus conductor) during an era before enclosed rear platforms existed, reports <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/meet-merseyside-man-who-could-33844126\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">the Liverpool Echo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Merfyn Williams with staff at St Helens depot\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777385002_341_0_St-Helens-Taff-and-drivers.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Merfyn Williams with staff at St Helens depot\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Merfyn Williams with staff at St Helens depot(Image: Arriva)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said: &#8220;There were no back doors on buses then; they were back-loaders, so it was freezing. The driver was the only warm person on the bus. I used to wear a really heavy coat in the winter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He has driven every route in St Helens over the decades. <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/news\/north-wales-news\/join-north-wales-live-whatsapp-27935216\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Sign up now for the latest news on the North Wales Live Whatsapp community<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Taff said: &#8220;I know the town like the back of my hand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Today, he works three days a week ferrying Arriva staff between the St Helens garage and its smaller depots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said: &#8220;It&#8217;s the camaraderie I like. It&#8217;s as simple as that. I get to chat with colleagues and hear all the gossip. Don&#8217;t tell anyone, but I love it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Six decades on the road have given Taff no shortage of stories, with his most memorable moment involving a runaway pram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said: &#8220;In the old days, when there were no doors on buses, a woman parked a pram under the stairs of the double-decker I was driving. I turned a corner, and the pram flew off the bus. They can be a bit less friendly towards bus drivers, and that&#8217;s a shame.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Some of the drivers Taff now works alongside remember him from their own school runs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said: &#8220;I used to drive the buses that took kids to school, and many of those kids have their own kids now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m always thinking about my family. In six decades, he&#8217;s become part of the fabric of St Helens depot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;He brings a smile to the face of every colleague he meets, and frankly, we&#8217;d be lost without him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;We think Taff could well be the oldest bus driver in Britain, but more importantly, he&#8217;s one of the best.
