Into Trafalgar Square<\/a> they kept coming, wave after wave of marchers of every generation and from every part of the country, as the trombones played \u2018Give Peace A Chance\u2019.<\/p>\n

Long after the earliest marchers reached Nelson\u2019s Column, others were still standing two miles back along the side of Hyde Park waiting to start. Organisers of Saturday\u2019s Together Alliance demonstration claimed 500,000 people had taken a public stand<\/a> against the Far Right in London. With police estimates, as ever, much lower, it was still clearly the biggest ever national demonstration<\/a> the UK has ever seen against the Far Right.<\/p>\n

The banners name-checked places from near and far \u2013 \u2018Chesterfield Dump Trump\u2019, \u2018Cornwall against Fascism\u2019, \u2018Nottingham Fights Back\u2019, \u2018St Albans Together\u2019. As the march passed two elderly gentlemen coming astonished out of the Royal Academy of Art, one exclaimed to the other \u201cwell, where have this lot been hiding?\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u2018Red Rebels\u2019 of Extinction Rebellion walked silently in the opposite direction to the march with white painted faces and red robes \u2013 as white police vans squatted in the side streets all along the mall.<\/p>\n

I marched with the \u2018Singing Resistance\u2019, a gathering of choirs and singers \u2013 inspired by Singing Resistance Minneapolis \u2013 who have been learning for weeks the songs they sang today in choirs across the land.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that one fine day,\u201d the crowds sang, \u201cthe power of love will rise above the love of power\u201d, holding placards that read \u2018Folk Against The Far Right\u2019, \u2018London Sea Shanty Collective\u2019, and \u2018sing for unity\u2019.<\/p>\n

Among the singers a little girl in a pink and green stripy bobble hat on her dad\u2019s shoulders with a placard saying, \u2018Be Nice, Don\u2019t Fight\u2019. Hand-picked daisies were sellotaped to the front and back.<\/p>\n

The songs have been learned from the United States where brave anti-ICE protesters risk their lives to stand with their immigrant neighbours \u2013 songs sung in minus 20 degrees and sung outside detention centres where they creep through open windows to the ears of detainees.<\/p>\n

In London, the songs went on under the drone of the police helicopters, and the drums of Extinction Rebellion, past the barricades at the end of the West End\u2019s poshest streets, and under the watchful eyes of London\u2019s famous statues, and all the way to Trafalgar Square.<\/p>\n

And, while the endless column of marchers moved through London, America was waking up to what has been billed as the biggest every march in American history \u2013 with more than 3,000 events in 50 states for the third No Kings protest.<\/p>\n

The songs carried the sound of solidarity across continents. We face the same enemies \u2013 hatred, fear, division, scapegoating. And while every one of Far Right activist Tommy Robinson\u2019s marches have had counterprotests, it seemed no fascists had wanted to counter 500,000 people.
