WASHINGTON (TNND) \u2014 King Charles III delivered a highly anticipated address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, marking a centerpiece moment in his first official visit to the United States<\/a> as monarch.<\/p>\n

The speech comes at a pivotal time for the transatlantic alliance, with political tensions and global conflicts testing the strength of the longstanding relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States.<\/p>\n

Charles\u2019s remarks place him among a small group of world leaders\u2014and even fewer British royals\u2014invited to address Congress. The moment carries deep symbolic weight, echoing Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s 1991 speech and reinforcing the historic bonds between the two nations.<\/p>\n

Charles began his address to Congress, referencing the Saturday night shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, calling it the \u201cincident not far from this great building.” He said the shooting \u201csought to harm the leadership of your nation and to foment wider fear and discord.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me say with unshakeable resolve: such acts of violence will never succeed,\u201d the King said. \u201cWhatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy, to protect all our people from harm, and to salute the courage of those who daily risk their lives in the service of our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saturday’s shooting took place just two days before King Charles and Queen Camilla were set to arrive in the US. The shooting briefly threatened to derail the plans for the four-day state visit. However, President Trump insisted that the royal couple would be \u201cvery safe\u201d while in the US.<\/p>\n

He also addressed Congress, beginning on a personal note by remembering his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpeaking in this renowned chamber of debate and deliberation, I cannot help but think of my late mother, Queen Elizabeth, who, in 1991, was also afforded this signal honor and similarly spoke under the watchful eye of the Statue of Freedom above us,\u201d the King said during his address.<\/p>\n

Charles then continued by praising US lawmakers. \u201cSo, I come here today with the highest respect for the United States Congress; this citadel of democracy created to represent the voice of all American people to advance sacred rights and freedoms,\u201d the King said, later adding that today\u2019s address is a \u201cgreat occasion in the life of our Nations to express the highest regard and friendship of the British people to the people of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

He later used part of his speech to praise NATO and the role the defence alliance has played in protecting US citizens and interests. Charles specifically mentioned Sept. 11, 2001, as the first time that NATO invoked Article Five, which declares an attack on any one of the NATO alliance\u2019s members is an attack on all.<\/p>\n

His comments come after President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO for the lack of involvement in the conflict with Iran, leading to threats from Trump to withdraw the US from the organization entirely.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe commitment and expertise of the United States Armed Forces and its allies lie at the heart of NATO, pledged to each other\u2019s defence, protecting our citizens and interests, keeping North Americans and Europeans safe from our common adversaries,\u201d Charles said.<\/p>\n

Not only NATO conservation, but King Charles also brought a message of environmental conservation to Capitol Hill, urging American lawmakers that climate change is a matter of national security and a \u201cshared responsibility.\u201d <\/p>\n

Charles, a longtime environmentalist and advocate for sustainability, told Congress, \u201cwe ignore at our peril\u201d that nature provides \u201cthe foundation for our prosperity and our national security.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOur generation must decide how to address the collapse of critical natural systems, which threatens far more than the harmony and essential diversity of nature,\u201d the monarch said.<\/p>\n

This topic addresses a point of contention between the US and the UK; Trump\u2019s \u201cdrill, baby, drill\u201d philosophy is one that King Charles is against. While Charles is devoted to the use of wind farms, Trump dislikes them.<\/p>\n

He concluded his address to Congress, reminding lawmakers that the US\u2019 influence carries \u201cweight and meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, America\u2019s words carry weight and meaning, as they have since independence. The actions of this great nation matter even more,\u201d the King said. \u201cPresident Lincoln understood this so well, with his reflection in the magisterial Gettysburg Address that the world may little note what we say, but will never forget what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then reaffirmed the relationship between the UK and the US as the latter marks its 250th birthday. \u201cLet our two countries rededicate ourselves to each other in the selfless service of our peoples and of all the peoples of the world,\u201d he said. \u201cGod bless the United States and the United Kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n

The speech unfolds against a complicated political backdrop. Relations between President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer <\/a>have been strained, with disagreements over trade, tariffs, and foreign policy\u2014including the war in Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In early March, just days after the Iran war began, Trump seemingly derided Britain<\/a> as \u201cour once Great Ally\u201d and told reporters<\/a>, \u201cThis is not Winston Churchill that we’re dealing with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charles and Queen Camilla arrived in Washington on Monday and had tea <\/a>with Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.<\/p>\n
