Estimated to make between \u00a3150m and \u00a3200m, it is the most valuable single-owner collection ever to be sold in the UK, an accolade currently held by the <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2025\/06\/11\/sothebys-sale-of-pauline-karpidass-london-collection-estimated-to-make-\u00a360m\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pauline Karpidas collection<\/a> which totalled \u00a3101m (with fees) at Sotheby\u2019s last September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The sale follows the \u00a335.8m (with fees) <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2026\/03\/05\/london-springs-back-to-life-in-sothebys-modern-and-contemporary-evening-sale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sale of four works<\/a> from the Lewis collection at Sotheby\u2019s in March. That selection focused solely on School of London artists\u2014Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Leon Kossoff\u2014which, according to Sotheby\u2019s Oliver Barker, is \u201cinseparable from the core DNA of Joe\u2019s collection.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The Lewis\u2019s clearly used that sale as a market test, and the June sale represents \u201ca much broader aperture\u201d, Barker says, \u201ca global checklist of the Titans of the last 150 years: Freud, Modigliani, Klimt, Schiele, Caillebotte, Soutine, Picasso, Bacon\u201d. Dana\u00eb by Egon Schiele, painted in 1909 when he was just 19, is offered for the first time since it was withdrawn from a Sotheby\u2019s New York sale in May 2017. It was <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2017\/04\/24\/schieles-landmark-danae-comes-to-auction-at-sothebys\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offered then for $30m to $40m<\/a> and returns now with a considerably lower estimate of \u00a312m to \u00a318m (around $16.1m to $24.2m).<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">A selection will be on view for the first time at Sotheby\u2019s New York this Saturday, 2 May, and more will be announced before the London sale in later June (exact date to be confirmed).<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Lewis and his daughter Vivienne have accumulated the collection over many decades, but mostly between the early 1990s and around 2015. He stresses: \u201cThis is by no means the closing of the chapter, the Lewis collection is still very actively buying, mostly through Joe&#8217;s daughter, Vivienne, who is incredibly engaged in the global art market. [The sale] says a lot about a generational shift of interest and taste in the family as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The decision to sell the collection in London is no accident. For the past decade since Brexit, the London auction market has been perceived\u2014sometimes justifiably, sometimes not\u2014to be in decline, lagging behind New York and the ascendant stars of Paris and Hong Kong. The end of season summer auctions in London have had a particularly tough time: in 2024 Christie\u2019s <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2024\/06\/25\/sothebys-london-modern-contemporary-recap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chose to eschew<\/a> June Modern and contemporary auctions in the city altogether. But, as Barker points out, it is still the second biggest art market globally, behind New York, and Lewis\u2019s decision to sell in London is a calculated vote of confidence. \u201cI love the fact that we&#8217;re going to be handling these in London, the city of Joe&#8217;s birth. It also vindicates the strategy of sticking to a major summer sales season in London.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Barker sees Lewis\u2019s move as \u201can injection of trust\u201d in London, perhaps an act of rebellion. \u201cJoe has always been a rule breaker. He&#8217;s always been somebody who likes to question the proven mechanism of things.\u201d With several enormous collections coming up for sale in New York next month\u2014S.I. Newhouse\u2019s $450m collection among them\u2014there was also the risk that Lewis\u2019s collection would, perhaps implausibly when seen in a UK context, become just another \u00a3100m-plus collection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Barker is well aware of that fact, particularly in a \u201ccongested\u201d art market calendar, and says the decision to sell in London was strategic: \u201cHe&#8217;s incredibly savvy, and he looked very closely at the Karpidas sale last year and the results in March\u201d. He continues: \u201cFor too long, the narrative has been that London is down and out. In 2025 he was pardoned by US President Donald Trump after pleading guilty to insider trading in 2024, which resulted in a $5m fine. In the 1990s, Lewis became the largest single shareholder at Christie\u2019s, before reportedly selling his stake to Francois Pinault in 1998 for \u00a3200m, roughly doubling his initial investment. In 2016, the Guardian reported that the Panama Papers revealed that Lewis had quietly bought the fabled collection of Victor and Sally Ganz privately before its public auction at Christie\u2019s, under the Ganz name, in 1997. Lewis had agreed that any profits above the $168m he paid would be split with the auction house\u2014effectively, an early version of a guarantee. The collection made $206m, a record for a single owner sale at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cHis collecting journey has definitely put him in a position of proximity to the market, which very, very few people achieve,\u201d Barker says. \u201cIt is no accident, I suppose, that people who own the auction houses are often great collectors, whether it&#8217;s Francois Pinault or Alfred Taubman. Joe was buying art before his involvement with the auction house, but at the same time, he was always highly instinctive, and knew many of the artists as well.\u201d He adds, \u201clike a lot of great collectors, he was never afraid to pay, in some cases, extraordinary sums to secure the greatest works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">One work that Lewis paid a large sum for is Klimt\u2019s Bildnis Gertrud Loew (Gertha Fels\u0151v\u00e1nyi) which he bought at Sotheby\u2019s in 2015, for \u00a324.8m (with fees). This June, the restituted work has a conservative estimate of \u00a320m to \u00a330m, despite the high profile sale of <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/buy\/auction\/2025\/leonard-a-lauder-collector-evening-auction\/bildnis-elisabeth-lederer-portrait-of-elisabeth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Klimt\u2019s portrait of Elisabeth Lederer<\/a> (1914-16) at Sotheby\u2019s New York in November for $236.4m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cJoe is a collector who loves to situate his art at the time of creation, he loves the stories around them\u201d Barker says, pointing to the Modigliani, Homme \u00e0 la pipe (Le notaire de Nice), painted in 1918 at the end of Modigliani\u2019s life when he had been sent to recuperate in Nice, and started painting the locals.
