Crews have spent more than 15 hours at the scene of a huge moorland fire near Greater Manchester. People woke up to the smell of smoke across the region this morning (May 1) after a blaze broke out at Snake Pass Summit, in the Peak District, shortly before 9pm last night.<\/p>\n
Nine fire engines are currently in attendance, alongside specialist resources. Police have closed off the A57 Snake Pass between Glossop and the Ladybower Reservoir.<\/p>\n
A Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters from Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire are continuing to work alongside partners from the Fire Operations Group (FOG) including local gamekeepers and landowners, and Derby Mountain Rescue, to extinguish a wildfire at Snakepass Summit.<\/p>\n
“Nine fire engines are in attendance. Support is being provided by several specialist vehicles including two wildfire units, a rural unimog, welfare unit, fuel bowser, two water carriers, and a helicopter. The affected area is approximately 1,200 metres by 600 metres.<\/p>\n
“Thank you to everyone who has called us regarding smoke in Glossop. This incident is causing a smoke plume which is affecting areas in and around Glossop. Please keep windows and doors closed if you can see or smell smoke.<\/p>\n
“A road closure is in place for the Snake Pass between Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir whilst emergency services deal with this incident. Please avoid the area.”<\/p>\n
