Measuring up at 5.1 metres long, it’s 350mm longer than a Defender 110 without the spare wheel, suggesting cabin space for up to six passengers.

The Freelander 8 rides on Chery’s flexible iMax platform, featuring centre and rear-locking differentials, and possibly an air suspension. It will be offered as a full EV, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and a range extender.

PHEV versions will use Chery’s 1.5-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with two electric motors. As of yet, there are no confirmed figures for range on any of the Freelander 8’s powertrains.

Freelander 8 exterior design

The Freelander 8 was designed by Land Rover in the UK, and adopts several styling cues from the Concept 97, giving it a futuristic, blocky appearance.

According to reports, cars sold in the Chinese domestic market will come with headlights incorporating two small screens. These serve as daytime running lights and points of information for other road users. These are, however, unlikely to make their way past European legislators.

The doors feature inset windows and run all the way up and over the body, while a split rear-quarter window harks back to the original Land Rover Freelander of 1997.

The Freelander 8’s wheel arches and rear roof section are finished in high-gloss black, with a total of eight colourways offered for the rest of the car. These include two matte-finished options, as well as more vibrant choices such as lime green and bright purple.

Interior design

Like the exterior, the Freelander 8’s cabin was penned by Land Rover. As with almost all Chinese models, the interior is big on screens with a full-width unit running the length of the cabin. A vertically-mounted touchscreen also sits in the centre of the dash.

Both will display a digital interface developed by Chery and are powered by a Chinese-developed software system. In a rare move for a Chinese manufacturer, there is a smattering of physical controls located below the central screen.

In addition to plenty of ambient lighting options, the second row of seats comes with captain’s chairs, and a large roof-mounted screen is available as an option for those in the back.

The Freelander 8’s interior is offered in six colours, including black, brown, beige, and purple. Each will come with different materials and trim elements.

Pricing

There is currently no word on the Freelander 8’s pricing. However, Chery says the brand will operate in the premium SUV segment and be sold through its own dedicated dealer network.

A handful of days after its global reveal at Auto Beijing 2026, it has been confirmed that the…

[4
11850,11909,11910,5,6
0":"post-26573","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-uk","8":"tag-chery","9":"tag-freelander","10":"tag-freelander-8","11":"tag-uk","12":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
