as they tackled the logistics of blowing up the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouthherald.co.uk\/all-about\/southway\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Southway<\/a> bomb in situ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The unexploded 250kg German SC250 from the Second World War was <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouthherald.co.uk\/news\/plymouth-news\/southway-bomb-plymouth-police-cordon-10942142\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">discovered in the vicinity of Flamborough Road <\/a>on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 29.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After nearly 48 hours of disruption, the bomb was safely detonated yesterday (Friday, May 1) in a controlled explosion that required meticulous multi-agency preparation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Speaking at a press conference earlier in the week, Colonel Nick Handy, from the Army\u2019s 8 Engineer Brigade, explained it was not safe to move the bomb because one of its fuses could not be fully assessed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Col Nick Handy speaks to the press outside Crownhill Police station, Plymouth\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0_Unexploded-WW2-bomb-detonated-in-Plymouth-after-1200-homes-evacuated.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Col Nick Handy speaks to the press outside Crownhill Police station, Plymouth\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Col Nick Handy speaks to the press outside Crownhill Police station, Plymouth(Image: William Dax \/ SWNS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Instead, he revealed the plan to use large amounts of sand to <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouthherald.co.uk\/news\/plymouth-news\/southway-bomb-detonation-confirmed-authorities-10944263\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">cover the bomb before it was blown up where it was<\/a>, to reduce the amount of shrapnel and fragments spread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A 400m cordon affecting 1,500 homes had been put in place and residents were urged to \u201cstay away\u201d from the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The detonation was <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouthherald.co.uk\/news\/plymouth-news\/inside-plymouth-bomb-explosion-police-10946460\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">successfully carried out at around 11.15am yesterday<\/a> and residents were able to return to their homes by afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Following the controlled explosion, Col Handy reflected on their ambition to avoid &#8220;another Exeter&#8221; Today we got it right, and that&#8217;s thanks to you to the guys and girls on the ground, who were excellent in everything that they did.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He estimated the size of the explosion was around a third of the potential size it could have been if not properly controlled, commending the \u201cguys and girls on the ground [who] were excellent in everything that they did&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Col Handy&#8217;s mention of Exeter was a reference to the 1,000kg bomb that was discovered by workmen in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.devonlive.com\/news\/devon-news\/police-called-incident-near-exeter-5048077\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Glenthorne Road by Exeter University on February 26, 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">At the time, around 2,600 properties were evacuated, including 1,400 students from university premises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The following day, a decision was made to detonate the 2.55m long bomb in Glenthorne Road rather than move it to a location where the blast would cause minimal disruption or destruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">However, despite hundreds of tonnes of sand and a special structure being built to contain the blast, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.devonlive.com\/news\/devon-news\/exeter-bomb-blast-year-anniversary-6692669\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">many buildings nearby were badly it had been unsafe to move the bomb and the controlled explosion was &#8220;not possible to prevent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">When asked about any impact to nearby buildings after the controlled explosion in Southway on Friday, Col Handy told the press: \u201cSo there might be some fragmentation that&#8217;s fallen out of the sky, but we&#8217;ve used the drone, and we&#8217;ve done a blast damage assessment with individuals and police cameras to walk around the area to ensure there&#8217;s no window breakage, there&#8217;s no obvious damage to cars, there&#8217;s no damage to buildings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe talked [yesterday] about the fact that the bomb unmitigated would cause substantial damage, and mitigated would still cause moderate damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI would suggest to you, we haven&#8217;t really caused any damage, and no more than a very heavy hail storm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He added that the device burned at about 1,000C for about 10 minutes. \u201cIf you thought the explosion was big, it could have been a lot bigger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouthherald.co.uk\/all-about\/plymouth-city-council\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Plymouth City Council<\/a> later said that the Army and <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouthherald.co.uk\/all-about\/royal-navy\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Royal Navy<\/a> UXO (unexploded ordnance) specialists confirmed that any dust and ash still present around the detonation site is residue, such as sand, and is not toxic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A spokesperson for the council said: \u201cA significant amount of the dust has already been removed as part of the clean\u2011up operation, however it was not possible to remove it all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\"
