People are discussing if they can stay in Britain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rabbis are leading calls for \u201chateful\u201d marches to be banned as many British Jews <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/opinion\/very-existence-jews-britain-attacked-golders-green-4389646?srsltid=AfmBOoopJFLdbAo-weSbXCLvoOiyms9dKw94svhis4iO0RnHCaOp9Rw6&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seriously consider if they can continue to live in the UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, on Wednesday in what police are treating as a terror incident.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under increased pressure to stop pro-Palestinian marches from taking place in the wake of the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether some protests should stop altogether, he told the Today programme: \u201cWe need to look at what further powers we can take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the attack, one rabbi blamed the regular marches in cities and towns across the country for encouraging violence against the Jewish community.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi\u00a0Sam Fromson, Golders Green synagogue, told The i Paper: \u201cI respect\u00a0people\u2019s\u00a0right to peaceful protests\u2026 sadly too many of these marches have seen people standing alongside shoulder to shoulder with those who demand violence and who preach hatred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you stand with people calling for intifada, if you stand next to them and you don\u2019t challenge them, you are condoning, and you are inviting <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/opinion\/antisemitism-britain-out-of-control-4312308?srsltid=AfmBOop_8efBBqNYc8HlaDCKkocJuVlA_mloUuYYU1X6Odz6gsjXZi2f&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">violence on the streets<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"1140\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295490206.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4395287\"  \/>Rabbi Sam Fromson said some marches had encouraged violence onto the streets against Jewish people <\/p>\n<p>\u2018People are concerned about letting their kids go to the shops\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Organisers of pro-Palestine protests have rejected attempts to connect antisemitic violence with their events, which they say are \u201cpeaceful\u201d and \u201csupported by many Jewish people who attend\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But Starmer has encouraged protesters to call out those chanting \u201cglobalise the intifada\u201d at Gaza marches and said he was concerned about the growing affect of the marches on Jewish communities. Despite Starmer urging those at matches to call out antisemitism, many want the Government to go further.<\/p>\n<p>Fromson said: \u201cPeople are concerned for their safety, thinking is it okay to let my kid go to the shops by themselves? Okay to let my kids take the bus? That\u2019s a horrible thing to have to think about in your day-to-day life just because you\u2019re Jewish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are nervous and when they can\u2019t be convinced of their basic physical safety walking down their local high street, there are many people who are thinking, is this the right place to raise my family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi\u00a0Alex\u00a0Chapper, from Borehamwood\u00a0and Elstree synagogue, said a ban on the marches was overdue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been calling for it for months and months and the fact that hasn\u2019t happened yet has allowed these things to continue to happen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Chapper, who was speaking at a synagogue in Golders Green Wednesday morning, said the attack has reminded people how vulnerable Jews are.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"506\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295490314.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4395288\"  \/>Rabbi Alex Chapper said the failure to ban hateful marches has allowed antisemitic attacks to continue<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came out of the synagogue unaware of what happened and had messages on my phone from my family and friends just checking I was okay\u2026 so the fear people have is real, it\u2019s a sense of not when will this stop, but where and when will be next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s stabbings took place amid a wave of violent antisemitic incidents. <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/everything-we-know-about-golders-green-stabbing-attack-4389961?srsltid=AfmBOoqWE1OqYD2Y1IaUn2zL7TpL-AE1qZE3yZIHJJrhJjbe0HboJLKm&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Suspect Essa Suleiman<\/a>, 45, has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing two men in Golders Green and another man on Great Dover Street. <\/p>\n<p>Terror level raised<\/p>\n<p>Following the attack, the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/what-uk-terror-level-being-raised-to-severe-really-means-4392670?srsltid=AfmBOopW6oxTI3V7VzcXpphYGvEDIyIdrlnhuIOJiq2S74NpNrK-71v6&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UK\u2019s threat level has been raised <\/a>from substantial to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely in the next six months. <\/p>\n<p>Over the last few months there have been a series of antisemitic attacks in London. Four ambulances belonging to a volunteer group were set alight; a brick and two bottles of petrol were thrown at Finchley Reform Synagogue; and a charity and a synagogue were targeted in the north London areas of Hendon and Kenton. Last year, during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, three people were killed in attack on a Manchester synagogue.<\/p>\n<p>A failed asylum seeker was also foiled attempting to enter the Israeli embassy in west London armed with two knives. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"570\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295378624_2f1e91.jpg\" alt=\"Essa Suleiman who has been charged with attempted murder over an attack during which two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, in what police are treating as a terrorist incident, sits at Westminster Magistrates??? REUTERS\/Julia Quenzler\" class=\"wp-image-4395375\"  \/>Essa Suleiman was charged with attempted murder of three people after he was accused of stabbing two Jewish men in Golders Green and another man in Great Dover Street on 29 April (Photo: Julia Quenzler\/Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Many Jewish people are living in fear, with a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpr.org.uk\/reports\/time-leave-uk-patterns-jewish-migration-israel-post-october-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survey by the\u00a0Institute for Jewish Policy Research<\/a> showing antisemitism is driving one in five Jewish people to think about leaving the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Chapper said: \u201cPeople are having genuine conversations for them and\u00a0their\u00a0families. What is the future here? Where would we feel safe?\u00a0And a lot of people feel that Israel <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/im-a-jewish-mother-in-london-im-considering-leaving-the-uk-as-i-fear-for-my-kids-4389494?srsltid=AfmBOoq8j04u6Y-jlBYwqAUTeWnziOkD2Bk7ou2f1EfILSjI6ZknfQoK&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is the only place they would\u00a0actually feel\u00a0safe<\/a>. And\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0the first time I can ever\u00a0remember people having these\u00a0really serious\u00a0conversations about not if, but when, are we\u00a0going.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Starmer has indicated there may be grounds for banning some protests. It comes after the Government approved a request from the Metropolitan Police to ban the Al Quds Day march in London last month.
