UK households from leaving seed out for birds after May 1 rule <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"withoutCaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/fresh-mackerel-on-the-market-6899435.jpg\" class=\"zoomEnabled\" data-img=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/14\/1200x712\/secondary\/fresh-mackerel-on-the-market-6899435.jpg?r=1777840244048\" alt=\"Fresh mackerel on the market\" title=\"Fresh mackerel on the market\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>All forms of mackerel are being removed from Waitrose shelves (Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Conservationists welcomed <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/waitrose\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Waitrose\u2019s<\/a> move to take mackerel off its shelves, and urged other <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/supermarkets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supermarkets<\/a> to follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/2192541\/uk-households-warned-stop-buying\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Marine Conservation Charity issued a warning about cod levels in April<\/a> urging shoppers to stop buying cod due to concerns for the future of cod populations.<\/p>\n<p>Overfishing has resulted in depleting mackerel stocks in the North-east Atlantic, with Ices saying the species, and the wider fishing industry, could face long-term risks unless countries stick to recommended catch limits<\/p>\n<p>Waitrose said that the decision in December by four coastal states to cut mackerel catches by 48% was a step forward but still did not meet recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>North-east Atlantic mackerel will no longer meet the supermarket\u2019s responsible sourcing requirements in line with the Sustainable Seafood Coalition codes of conduct, the retailer said.<\/p>\n<p>Jake Pickering, head of agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries at Waitrose, said: \u201cBy suspending sourcing of mackerel at Waitrose, we are reinforcing our ethical and sustainable business commitments, acting to tackle overfishing and protect the long-term health of our oceans and this crucial fish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur customers trust us to source responsibly, and we are closely monitoring the fishery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to bringing mackerel back to our shelves once it meets our high sourcing standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As alternatives, Waitrose is launching a new range of fish products, including hot smoked herring, hot smoked peppered herring and hot smoked sweetcure seabass, all of which are Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified.<\/p>\n<p>The retailer said it would also introduce MSC-certified frozen sardines from May as a sustainable replacement for frozen mackerel, and plans to become the first retailer to sell 100% MSC tinned sardines.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/waitrose\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Waitrose<\/a> said it would maintain its relationship with its mackerel suppliers, and its new supply of herring, seabass, sardines and trout will be sourced through current supplier partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>But there is currently no predetermined time frame for when Waitrose will start sourcing mackerel again.<\/p>\n<p>Marija Rompani, director of ethics and sustainability at the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/john-lewis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Lewis<\/a> Partnership, which owns Waitrose, said: \u201cWe believe sustainable food production must balance climate action, nature protection and responsible fish sourcing is fundamental to protecting our oceans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to work closely with suppliers and industry partners to support the recovery and responsible management of fish stocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles Clover, co-founder of conservation charity Blue Marine Foundation, said mackerel \u2013 one of the largest remaining commercial fish stocks in the north-east Atlantic \u2013 had declined 75% in the last 10 years because fishing nations including the UK had overfished it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have put too little effort into the task of reaching agreement on a sharing arrangement \u2013 and some countries have been awarding themselves more quota than is justified by science,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis crisis has been ignored for too long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope that this action by Waitrose sends it to the top of the political agenda.
