Our mission is to inspire people of every age and ability to get active &#8211; and these extraordinary numbers show the massive draw and power of the London Marathon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For the first time ever, more than a million of those applications came from within the UK alone.<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s been a brilliant shift towards balance too, with male and female registrations reaching near parity.<\/p>\n<p>The surge in applications follows what can only be described as a history-making weekend in London.<\/p>\n<p>Kenya&#8217;s Sabastian Sawe became the first person to run a sub-two-hour marathon in competitive race conditions, crossing the finish line in an astonishing 1:59:30.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"7b0a7\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"d85cfaefdb4024b449e2c0da4b9cb54c\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%206720%204480'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/london-marathon.jpg\" width=\"6720\" height=\"4480\" alt=\"London Marathon\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Millions turned out for the London Marathon last month<\/p>\n<p> | GETTY<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old&#8217;s time was more than a minute quicker than the late Kelvin Kiptum&#8217;s previous world record of 2:00:35, set back in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am feeling good. I am so happy.
