A Green victory would be a big upset in a council controlled by Labour since 2002.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m not like George Finch\u2019<\/p>\n<p>If elected, Law would be one of the youngest council leaders in the country. He says he gets attacked for his age by people who say he \u201ccan\u2019t run a council\u201d and is \u201cgoing to be like George Finch\u201d \u2013 the UK\u2019s youngest council leader.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295943155.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4400546\"  \/>Dylan Law is set to become Hackney\u2019s deputy mayor and he\u2019s already facing attacks from people who don\u2019t think he can run a council due to his age (Photo: Alexa Phillips\/The i Paper)<\/p>\n<p>Finch, the 19-year-old Reform leader of Warwickshire County Council, who narrowly survived a vote of no confidence in March.<\/p>\n<p>Law says he is more interested in Finch\u2019s choice of party than his birth certificate. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s right to just blame his age,\u201d he says. \u201cI think he just happens to be that age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He says he doubts accusations that he is inexperienced will \u201cstick\u201d. \u201cIf we get Hackney Council and run it poorly for years, attack me as much as you want, I\u2019ll take it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Law, who is studying business at SP Jain London School of Management, says he\u2019ll have to \u201cfigure out\u201d how to balance his course work with running a council. If elected, he plans to discuss his options with lecturers, potentially doing his studies part-time or leaving the course if it\u2019s not feasible.<\/p>\n<p>Law credits a visit to the town hall in Hackney as the experience that got him involved in politics. \u201cI didn\u2019t know what councillors were, and found out what the Labour one stood for \u2013 wasn\u2019t exactly my cup of tea,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p>A lifelong Hackney resident, he went to academy schools, where he says he was appalled by an effective ban on \u201cBlack hairstyles\u201d. He has also lived in council homes throughout his life, where he describes conditions as \u201chumiliating\u201d. He lives with his grandmother, having moved in with her due to overcrowding in his previous family home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy personal experience has been poor quality of housing, mainly things like leaks, mould \u2013 my ceiling and walls are ripped right now,\u201d he says. \u201cWe don\u2019t even bother to call the housing association, because they don\u2019t respond. People pay rent every single month, they pay council tax every single month, and we get nothing out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Divisions over the war in Gaza and antisemitism allegations<\/p>\n<p>Law says the war in Gaza has had an impact on rising support for the Greens. He says many voters feel the Government has been \u201ctoo strict on Palestinian activists\u201d and wants the Government to stop supplying arms to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s pro-Gaza stance has attracted supporters \u2013 but also allegations of antisemitism. Last Thursday, two Green candidates standing for Lambeth council in south London were arrested over alleged antisemitic social media posts. Another Green candidate in Newcastle was accused of antisemitism over posts calling for \u201cevery single Zionist\u201d to be killed.<\/p>\n<p>Law says he isn\u2019t familiar with these cases, but defends Zack Polanski when asked about the Green leader\u2019s response to the arrest of a man over the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, north London. <\/p>\n<p>Polanski reposted a message on X accusing officers of \u201crepeatedly and violently kicking a mentally ill man in the head when he was already incapacitated by Taser\u201d. He later apologised, saying police responses \u201cneed later reflection in the right forums, but I accept that social media is not the appropriate channel for doing so\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley accused Polanski of amplifying \u201cinaccurate and misinformed commentary\u201d, while Israel\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister said he is an \u201cextremist\u201d who \u201clegitimises violence against Jews\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Having seen the video of the arrest, Law says there are \u201ca lot of questions to be asked about the Met Police\u201d, adding: \u201cI\u2019ve seen my own friends and some family members be kicked, pinned wrongly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295945117.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4400609\"  \/>Ciara Bains is one of the many people choosing to vote Green over the current Government\u2019s stance on Gaza (Photo: Alexa Phillips\/The i Paper)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m disappointed in Labour\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Despite these controversies, the Greens\u2019 message appears to be resonating with many voters.<\/p>\n<p>Ciara Bains, 29, says she plans to vote Green. She supports plans to make sure the council\u2019s investments don\u2019t support a genocide \u2013 as ruled by Amnesty International \u2013 in Gaza. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the most important things at the moment outside of our own lives here,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Bains, a project manager, says Polanski, who lives in Hackney, and Zo\u00eb Garbett, the Green mayoral candidate and councillor in her ward, are both \u201cactually part of the community\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s policies on housing \u2013 which include improving council homes and supporting rent controls at a national level \u2013 appeal to her, too. \u201cMy rent is pretty much as much as I could afford in London, and it\u2019s still hard,\u201d she says. \u201cI think they have the goal of keeping that down and keeping it affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says she used to vote Labour, but feels disappointed by Labour\u2019s leadership, both locally and nationally, adding: \u201cI don\u2019t feel like they are what they say they are anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295944151.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4400572\"  \/>Naomi Filbert cares about the environment and she believes the Greens focus on this more (Photo: Alexa Phillips\/The i Paper)<\/p>\n<p>Naomi Filbert, a 27-year-old events worker, is likely to vote Green. \u201cThey\u2019re just aligned with things I\u2019m looking for, I guess, just to actually focus a bit more on the environment,\u201d she says. \u201cI think the others claim they are but don\u2019t actually follow up.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She says mainstream politicians tend to overlook the environment if it \u201cisn\u2019t what\u2019s going to make them money or give them votes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m not voting Green with that idiot in charge\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Others, like Steve Parker, are not convinced. Parker, a 66-year-old retired dustman, plans to vote Reform because he wants \u201ca change\u201d and is \u201cnot satisfied with anything at the moment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may be no good,\u201d he says. \u201cWe don\u2019t know, do we? I\u2019m fed up with the run-of-the-mill Labour, Conservatives, and I couldn\u2019t vote Green with the idiot in charge there. He wants to legalise drugs, doesn\u2019t like the royal family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295943995_be6451.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4400598\"  \/>Steve Parker is not a voter convinced by the Greens while Zak Polanski leads them (Photo: Alexa Phillips\/The i Paper)<\/p>\n<p>A former Tory voter, he says he supports Reform because of pledges to cut immigration.<\/p>\n<p>He says the council has closed some streets to cars, which has increased traffic on the main roads. \u201cWhere I live, they\u2019ve shut all the back roads so people who know the area can\u2019t use it as a cut through,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re saying it\u2019s for cleaner air. What about the poor buggers that live on Graham Road? There\u2019s five times more traffic there, so don\u2019t they count? They can all get carbon monoxide poisoning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Polanski has a bizarre record\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Bill Bamber, a 74-year-old pensioner, will vote for his independent candidate, who is campaigning against road closures. The former Lib Dem voter says the number of cars near his home has risen tenfold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that some roads gain and some roads lose,\u201d he says. \u201cLiving on a losing road is a bit of a pain and dirty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He says he doesn\u2019t think the Greens have their policies \u201cfully worked out\u201d. \u201cIt\u2019s irrelevant to the local politics, but Zack Polanski has a rather checkered and bizarre record,\u201d he adds, pointing to his previous claims that hypnosis could increase a woman\u2019s breast size.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295945189.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4400608\"  \/>Patrick Attaridge isn\u2019t voting for any main party and has decided to vote independent (Photo: Alexa Phillips\/The i Paper)<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Attaridge, 73, says he is a lifelong Labour voter. \u201cI think they\u2019re doing a good enough job,\u201d he says. \u201cEveryone can say what they\u2019re going to do when they get in, but unfortunately, it changes when people get in. So I\u2019m going to stick with Labour, give them another chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt Lorde, 58, says he has \u201calways voted Labour\u201d and thinks they are \u201cbest for this area\u201d. Lorde, who is unemployed, lives in a council home and says the housing association that manages it could be a bit better and \u201cmore proactive\u201d, but they \u201cdo get things done eventually\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Inexperienced candidates making wild promises\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Caroline Woodley claims Labour is \u201cgreener than the Greens\u201d, who do not have the experience needed to run the council. \u201cThey would be bringing in people who have never even served as councillors before to run the council,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>She describes Law as a \u201cvery bright and ambitious young man.\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s one to watch,\u201d she says. \u201cI think he could be a very talented politician. Do I think he could go straight from never being a councillor to being a statutory deputy mayor?
