{"id":30290,"date":"2026-05-06T19:04:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T19:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/30290\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T19:04:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T19:04:12","slug":"london-tories-suspend-candidate-who-called-for-mass-deportations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/30290\/","title":{"rendered":"London Tories suspend candidate who called for &#8216;mass deportations&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/harrow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Harrow;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Harrow<\/a> candidate in <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/london-local-elections-2026-labour-230133402.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:tomorrow\u2019s local elections;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tomorrow\u2019s local elections<\/a> has been suspended by the Conservative Party after a series of social media posts linked to an account he is associated with appeared to express support for far-right activist <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/tommy-robinson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Tommy Robinson;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Tommy Robinson<\/a> and call for \u201cmass deportations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nathan Smith was the Conservative candidate for West Harrow at the upcoming Harrow Council elections on May 7 but comments which come from an account associated with him \u2013 described by the Labour opposition as \u201cdeeply concerning\u201d \u2013 have prompted his suspension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Posts sent from an X account that appears to be Mr Smith contain comments made over many months, including suggesting the \u201cmass <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/deportation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:deportation;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">deportation<\/a>\u201d of Afghans from the UK and support for Mr Robinson after he was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after a man was allegedly assaulted at St Pancras train station on Monday July 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In one post, the account replied to a video appearing to show the alleged incident at St Pancras commenting \u201cGood on Tommy. No doubt the w*n*er deserved it\u201d. In another post relating to Afghan refugees, the account commented: \u201cI don\u2019t think the Afghan government should get a penny more until they accept the mass deportation of their people back home\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The account apparently belonging to Mr Smith also questioned why a man was raising an Indian flag alongside a British flag, commenting \u201cyou\u2019re in England mate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Nathan Smith (LDRS)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/00dbbb69915e3e76ee9b3aed31aa516f.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Nathan Smith (LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But despite the suspension he will remain on Thursday\u2019s ballot paper as a candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This is because under electoral law, if a party nominates someone as their official candidate with a political party description and a logo, once the nomination deadline has passed the ballot paper cannot be amended \u2013 even if that candidate is suspended or expelled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It comes after another Harrow Conservative candidate was suspended by the party pending an investigation into a series of social media posts linked to an account they were associated with. An investigation was launched into the former candidate for North Harrow due to comments which come from an account associated with him in response to posts by several non-white MPs on social media platform X. The <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/conservatives\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Conservatives;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Conservatives<\/a> also withdrew party support for his campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Labour Party Chair, Anna Turley, has written to Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch earlier this month querying why similar action hasn\u2019t been taken against Mr Smith due to the online posts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The letter states: \u201cI understand from media reports that Mr Jackson has now been suspended by the Conservative Party. Yet, in a neighbouring ward, Conservative candidate Nathan Smith has reportedly also made deeply concerning statements, including calls for mass deportations, opposing the flying of the Indian flag and expressing support for Tommy Robinson, including in contexts associated with violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cGiven the seriousness of both cases, it is difficult to understand why equivalent disciplinary action has not been taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\" (LDRS\/X)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"596\" height=\"781\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6582d9e131022bafc4da840cb0badf04.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(LDRS\/X)<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Social media posts by an account linked to Mr Smith (LDRS\/X)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"741\" height=\"242\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/cc131d61c35f8eb83d44a4c543611022.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Social media posts by an account linked to Mr Smith (LDRS\/X)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Conservative Party has since confirmed Mr Smith\u2019s suspension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A Conservative Party spokesman told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): \u201cNathan Smith has been suspended from the Conservative Party pending investigation. This process is rightly confidential. Residents here in Harrow are proud of the multiculturalism and diversity of our borough.
