Motorists are facing long delays on the road this morning in the East of England following a serious accident and ongoing police investigations.<\/p>\n

The A14 in Suffolk is closed in both directions between J43 (Bury St Edmunds) and J44 (Moreton) due to a Suffolk Police-led incident.<\/p>\n

National Highways stated that Suffolk Police were conducting investigations into the collision and its aftermath.<\/p>\n

It noted that the westbound carriageway can be reopened once police incident screens are in place on the eastbound carriageway.<\/p>\n

The transport organisation stated that the westbound carriageway is expected to open to traffic again soon.<\/p>\n

However, the eastbound carriageway will remain closed “until at least late afternoon”.<\/p>\n

Road maps from National Highways suggest that normal traffic conditions will not return until around 11.30am.<\/p>\n

Given the police investigations, this estimate could change over the coming hours, although National Highways has introduced a diversion route for motorists.<\/p>\n

NATIONAL HIGHWAYS<\/p>\n

Traffic cameras from the area show large stretches of the A14 completely shut off, with no cars on either carriageway.<\/p>\n

Most of the main roads surrounding Bury St Edmunds to the north and east have very slow-moving traffic.<\/p>\n

Around half of the A14 between J45 and J46 shows stationary traffic, while the road between J43 and J44 remains closed.<\/p>\n

National Highways is urging motorists impacted by the police-led incident to follow the signposted diversion route.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Suffolk Police said: “We were called at 2.26am. The A14 is currently closed in both directions at Bury St Edmunds following a serious collision. <\/p>\n

“The road is closed between junction 43 and junction 44 and is expected to remain closed for some time.”<\/p>\n
