If you do go, it\u2019s worth knowing that:<\/p>\n<p>You are entitled to spoil your ballot paper, for example by writing a message in protest .  This will be recorded.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t put your name on your ballot paper \u2013 If you do it won\u2019t be counted as it\u2019s meant to be anonymous<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTellers\u201d \u2013 volunteers on behalf of candidates \u2013 will sometimes stand outside polling stations and ask for your polling card number so they can remind people who haven\u2019t voted to do so. They will also be asked to self-isolate to minimise the risk to the public in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>What is hantavirus?<\/p>\n<p>Hantaviruses are a group of 38 viruses carried by rodents such as rats, mice and voles, most of which can cause disease in humans. Photo credit should read: Joe Giddens\/PA Wire<br \/>Photographer: Joe Giddens<br \/>Provider: Joe Giddens\/PA Wire<br \/>Source: PA<\/p>\n<p>Prioritise patients<\/p>\n<p>The test results can be used to prioritise high-risk people for further testing and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>At-home tests to \u2018revolutionise\u2019 diagnosis<\/p>\n<p>Finger prick blood tests could revolutionise dementia diagnosis \u2013 they offer a low cost, scalable way to identify people who may be at higher risk of\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s\u00a0disease and who should be offered further checks.<\/p>\n<p>DR SHEONA SCALES, ALZHEIMER\u2019S RESEARCH UK<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"570\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_240345890.jpg\" alt=\"A scientist holds a test tube of blood, in front of brain scans\" class=\"wp-image-3539669\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\"  \/>Scientists have long been trying to understand the root cause of Alzheimer\u2019s (Photo: Andrew Brookes\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/inews-theme\/assets\/images\/chevron.svg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Residents in Aberdeen \u2013 preparing to vote at <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/farage-local-election-landslide-4390638?ico=in-line_link\" id=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/farage-local-election-landslide-4390638\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this week\u2019s Scottish Parliament election<\/a> \u2013 know just how heated and divisive the issue can be.<\/p>\n<p>The small north-east port city had 424 asylum seekers staying in hotels \u2013 more than anywhere else in Scotland, according to the Government\u2019s annual figures in December 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Residents have seen anti-immigration protesters face off against anti-racism activists outside hotels over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>The Home Office recently <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/11-asylum-hotels-shut-190-remain-open-4354171?ico=in-line_link\" id=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/11-asylum-hotels-shut-190-remain-open-4354171\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulled migrants out of the Sure Hotel in the city centre<\/a>, part of Labour\u2019s effort to gradually shut all asylum hotels across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>However, hundreds of new arrivals are thought to still remain in other hotels and former student accommodation blocks in and around Aberdeen.<\/p>\n<p>And Aberdeen City Council expects a 30 per cent rise in \u201cdisplaced households\u201d coming to the city in the next 12 months, according to a report by its housing committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Reform plan is horrific\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Voters who spoke to The i Paper shared their anxiety about the hotel issue \u2013 but some appeared to be appalled by Reform\u2019s campaign pledge to build detention centres in Green-run areas. <\/p>\n<p>Fiona Robertson, who has taken part in counter-protests outside hotels, said Reform\u2019s promise was \u201chorrific\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The 45-year-old disability campaigner said: \u201cBuilding camps is bad enough \u2013 but treating people\u2019s lives and safety as weapons against political enemies is insanity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScreaming outside hotels \u2013 it\u2019s cruel to target people and make them afraid,\u201d she added on recent protests. \u201cIt breaks my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"529\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295914988.jpg\" alt=\"Jamie Morrison, 49, said Reform were scaremongering (Photo: The i Paper)\" class=\"wp-image-4401212\"  \/>Jamie Morrison, 49, said Reform is scaremongering<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Morrison, a 49-year-old retail worker who told The i Paper earlier this week she is planning to vote Green, said: \u201cIt\u2019s scary that Reform has taken off in Scotland. It\u2019s embarrassing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea of detention centres and army barracks \u2013 it\u2019s too prison-like. Farage is using the asylum issue to scaremonger. He doesn\u2019t actually care about anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Reform at least understand\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Some Aberdonians are anxious about the ongoing influx of asylum seekers, and told The i Paper earlier this week they were planning to vote for Reform.<\/p>\n<p>Farage\u2019s party has been polling between 15 and 20 per cent in Scotland for the past year. The final More in Common MRP survey, published on Monday, put them on course to win 22 seats and become the second-largest party at Holyrood \u2013 behind the SNP, but ahead of Labour.<\/p>\n<p>The More in Common poll published earlier this week has the SNP on course to take all the constituency seats in Aberdeen \u2013 though Reform is expected to pick up regional seats under Scotland\u2019s voting system.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Henderson, 52, said earlier this week that he was planning to vote for Farage\u2019s party, largely over his frustration at asylum seekers staying in hotels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re hanging around the streets not doing anything,\u201d he claimed. \u201cThey\u2019re getting everything for free in the hotels. We haven\u2019t got the housing, we haven\u2019t got the services. Reform at least understand. Labour, the SNP, the Tories, they just don\u2019t listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asylum seekers in hotels who have meals provided get \u00a39.95 a week from the Home Office. Those in self-catered accommodation, such as student flats, get \u00a349 a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Asylum hotels are creating a ghetto\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Brian Taylor, who lives just outside Aberdeen, said he was a traditional Labour voter worried about the asylum issue. He is unsure who to vote for now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do worry about the number asylum seekers coming,\u201d said the 77-year-old. \u201cThey\u2019re cut off in these hotels. It\u2019s creating a ghetto. They\u2019re not always fitting in with our way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Taylor is not convinced by Reform UK or its pledge to build detention centres. He added: \u201cYou can\u2019t send immigrants away to certain places like that. You have to try to spread people around fairly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gordon does not like the anti-asylum protests happening in the city. \u201cShouting at people at hotels is not a protest, it\u2019s abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he does worry about migrant numbers. \u201cThe issue is there are not enough houses and not enough jobs. I suppose we have to try to accommodate them somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"460\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_295914984-e1778086847612.jpg\" alt=\"Gloria McShane, a resident living near to asylum seekers, said Reform rise was based on \" hatred=\"\" the=\"\" i=\"\" paper=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4401218\"  \/>Gloria McShane, a resident living near to asylum seekers, said Reform\u2019s rise was based on \u2018hatred\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Gloria McShane lives next to a former student block which began to house asylum seekers last year. \u201cThere\u2019s been no issues, other than the unpleasant protests,\u201d said the 65-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really bad that Reform has grown here in Scotland\u2026 If Reform get elected it won\u2019t make anyone\u2019s lives any easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voters \u2018won\u2019t take kindly to bullying\u2019, Reform warned<\/p>\n<p>According to charities and churches working with migrants, at least 240 asylum seekers are still thought to be staying at hotels in and around Aberdeen. And almost 300 asylum seekers are said to be living in former student accommodation sites.<\/p>\n<p>A group called Unite the Clans Aberdeen Against Illegal Migration (AAIM) has previously organised protests outside hotels, with Stand-Up to Racism Scotland holding counter-demos.<\/p>\n<p>Rev Dave McCarthy, the pastor at Westhill Community Church, just outside the city, said there has been a \u201clot of misleading stuff\u201d about what asylum seekers receive at the anti-asylum protests.<\/p>\n<p>He said the church had helped migrants with clothing and practical advice. \u201cI think they get \u00a310 a week [from the Home Office], so it\u2019s not as if they\u2019re getting much. We\u2019re certainly not giving them laptops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As voters prepare to go to the polls on Thursday, Reform has said that a Farage government at Westminster would try to build detention centres in any areas held by the Greens in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Planning legislation could be changed if necessary, Glasgow Reform candidate Thomas Kerr told The Herald. \u201cVote Green? Then sadly live with the consequences,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Scottish Greens co-leader Ross Greer responded: \u201cReform UK are now openly threatening voters. Scots will not take kindly to this kind of bullying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SNP called Reform\u2019s plan \u201cvile\u201d.
