Over 100 firefighters are currently battling a major fire in Rutherglen<\/a> this evening. Multiple road closures are in place, with members of the public asked to avoid the area.<\/p>\n

The blaze broke out inside a shop on Baronald Street at around 6.19pm this evening, May 7. Now, 22 fire appliances and additional resources are on scene, as well as Police Scotland<\/a> officers.<\/p>\n

Large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing into the air, with drivers over the M74 reporting sightings.<\/p>\n

Baronald Street along with Dalmarnock Road and Farmeloan are currently closed. And the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is urging nearby residents to close their windows and doors.<\/p>\n

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Over 100 firefighters are currently tackling a fire on Baronald Street in Rutherglen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were alerted at 6.19pm on Thursday, 7 May, to reports of a building fire.<\/p>\n

“Operations Control have mobilised 22 fire appliances and additional resources to the scene of the fire which is affecting a commercial building.<\/p>\n

“Crews remain at the scene.<\/p>\n

“Nearby residents are asked to close windows and doors as a precautionary measure, and people are asked to stay clear of the area.”<\/p>\n

An update from Police Scotland reads: “Emergency services are in attendance following a fire at a shop premises in Baronald Street, Rutherglen which was reported at 6.40pm on Thursday, 7 May, 2026.<\/p>\n

“Baronald Street along with Dalmarnock Road and Farmeloan are currently closed.<\/p>\n

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area at this time.”<\/p>\n

The exact cause of the fire is unknown at this time. We are also unaware of any reported casualties.<\/p>\n
