Buchan Offshore Wind<\/a> has officially opened its new Glasgow base, marking a significant step forward for one of Scotland\u2019s most advanced\u00a0commercial scale\u00a0floating offshore wind developments.<\/p>\n

The visit by Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP\u00a0on Thursday 19 March 2026 highlighted the project\u2019s expanding team\u00a0and its potential to unlock largescale manufacturing and\u00a0long term\u00a0economic value for Scotland.<\/p>\n

UK Energy Minister opens Buchan Offshore Wind’s new Glasgow base<\/p>\n

Speaking at the opening, Energy Minister Michael Shanks said:\u00a0 ‘I\u2019m delighted that Buchan Offshore Wind has opened a new base in Glasgow. It\u2019s a real marker of momentum in our clean power mission to back good jobs and supply-chain opportunities, bringing more of that work and expertise together here in Scotland.<\/p>\n

‘With plans to develop floating foundation manufacturing capacity in the north of Scotland later this decade, this is exactly the kind of long-term industrial vision we want to see, strengthening energy security and supporting communities as we build a clean powered future.’<\/p>\n

A pioneering project<\/p>\n

Clare Lavelle, Project Director for Buchan Offshore Wind emphasised the importance of the office opening as part of a wider national opportunity.<\/p>\n

She said: ‘The United Kingdom \u2013 and Scotland in particular \u2013 are showing that we can be genuine\u00a0global\u00a0clean energy\u00a0leaders.\u00a0With our deep waters, powerful winds, range of ports and decades of offshore\u00a0expertise\u00a0operating\u00a0in the North\u00a0Sea, it\u2019s\u00a0clear Scotland is the natural home for this new global industry to develop and grow.<\/p>\n

‘Buchan Offshore Wind is a pioneering development \u2013 one that\u00a0showcases\u00a0how Scotland can harness its natural advantages to create a globally competitive floating\u00a0offshore\u00a0wind industry. Today\u2019s office opening marks the next step in that journey.’<\/p>\n

Delivering\u00a0home-grown\u00a0energy and long-term economic value<\/p>\n

Buchan Offshore Wind is developing a near 1 GW commercial scale floating offshore wind farm,\u00a0located\u00a075 km northeast of Fraserburgh,\u00a0comprising\u00a0up to 70 floating turbines on concrete foundations manufactured in Scotland.<\/p>\n

Once operational, the project will generate enough clean energy to power over one million homes, contributing significantly to the UK\u2019s long term energy security.<\/p>\n

The project is also expected to create 2,900 jobs during construction and deliver more than \u00a32 billion in economic value to Scotland over its lifetime.<\/p>\n

Clare\u00a0Lavelle added: ‘Recent global events have shown that energy security is economic security. Homegrown floating offshore\u00a0wind is now essential national infrastructure \u2013 providing secure and stable power for households and industry across the UK.’<\/p>\n

During the visit Minister Shanks met Glasgow based team members in engineering and consenting and\u00a0community\u00a0benefits\u00a0roles, hearing firsthand about the skills and innovation driving the project.<\/p>\n

He also\u00a0met\u00a0with\u00a0ports and\u00a0supply chain\u00a0companies preparing to deliver for the significant pipeline of floating\u00a0offshore\u00a0wind projects\u00a0in Scottish waters.<\/p>\n

The Minister was shown a model of BW Ideol\u2019s patented Damping Pool\u00ae \u2013 the floating foundation technology that will help launch serial production of floating concrete foundations in the north of Scotland early next decade.<\/p>\n

Catalysing a new Scottish manufacturing capability<\/p>\n

Buchan Offshore Wind has set out an ambitious development timetable and a commitment to manufacturing in Scotland, which aligns with project partner BW Ideol\u2019s proposed floating foundation manufacturing facility at Ardersier in the north of Scotland.<\/p>\n

The new office, located in Glasgow city centre, will serve as a central base for project delivery, stakeholder engagement, industry and supply-chain\u00a0collaboration\u00a0and the continued progression of onshore and offshore development activities.<\/p>\n
