works in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/keir-starmer-british-steel-can-36887502\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Scunthorpe<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But economic control of the plant has remained in Chinese hands since, leaving the company in what has been described as &#8220;a halfway house&#8221; It was reported it is also possible an announcement could be fast-tracked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A government spokesman told <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/article\/british-steel-scunthorpe-nationalisation-kings-speech-c535hfdnm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">the Times<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019ve been clear that safeguarding UK steelmaking is our priority. We\u2019re continuing discussions with Jingye to agree a pragmatic and realistic solution to secure the long-term future of the Scunthorpe site. Discussions are ongoing and no conclusion or decision has yet been reached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Scunthorpe site is home to the UK&#8217;s two remaining blast furnaces, which make iron, then steel, from scratch by combining iron ore with coking coal. The last-gasp rescue package to save them came in April last year after claims of a plot by Chinese shareholder Jingye to strip Britain of its ability to produce \u201cvirgin\u201d steel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It saw the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/house-of-commons\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">House of Commons<\/a> sit on a Saturday for the first time since 1982, after Argentina&#8217;s invasion of the Falkland Islands, and only the sixth time since the end of the Second World War, to enact laws giving the UK state operational control. The company would therefore have irrevocably closed down primary steel making at British Steel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Government officials have since been in talks with Jingye over a potential compensation package in which UK taxpayers would pay Jingye for its British Steel shareholding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Jingye was reportedly demanding more than \u00a31 billion from the government before snubbing an offer from the UK worth tens of millions of pounds in exchange for economic control of the business in March.
