{"id":33440,"date":"2026-05-11T08:13:58","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T08:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/33440\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T08:13:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T08:13:58","slug":"curtains-create-cosy-corners-in-listening-bar-upstairs-at-hausu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/33440\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtains create cosy corners in listening bar Upstairs at Hausu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wool and sheer voile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/curtains\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">curtains<\/a> envelop this intimate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/listening-bars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">listening bar<\/a> in south London designed by artist Eva Gold, drawing on references including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/david-lynch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Lynch<\/a>&#8216;s Twin Peaks series and a modernist Mies van der Rohe installation.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs at Hausu is located directly above <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hausulondon.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hausu<\/a> restaurant, which serves an array of Asian-inspired small plates to the soundtrack of jazz, soul and electronic vinyl.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2312745 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/upstairs-at-hausu-peckham-london-listening-bars-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Upstairs at Hausu bar in Peckham, London\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The bar is one floor up from Peckham&#8217;s Hausu restaurant<\/p>\n<p>The newly added bar similarly plays music records but also hosts an array of DJs and serves a robust selection of cocktails that riff on the food offered downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>When designer and artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/evagold.jpg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eva Gold<\/a> was put in charge of the bar&#8217;s interiors, television and cinema ended up being key points of reference \u2013 fitting given that Hausu was named after a 1977 Japanese horror-comedy film.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2312743 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/upstairs-at-hausu-peckham-london-listening-bars-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Upstairs at Hausu bar in Peckham, London\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Brown woollen curtains were hung around the edge of the room<\/p>\n<p>Her main inspiration was The Red Room from director David Lynch&#8217;s cult series Twin Peaks, a surreal, multidimensional space engulfed by crimson curtains.<\/p>\n<p>Gold was also influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/audio\/playlist\/34\/565\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Velvet and Silk Cafe<\/a>, an installation created by designer Lilly Reich and architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/mies-van-der-rohe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mies van der Rohe<\/a> for a fashion exhibition in 1927 that featured several curved &#8220;walls&#8221; and partitions made from swathes of fabric.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2312750 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/upstairs-at-hausu-peckham-london-listening-bars-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Upstairs at Hausu bar in Peckham, London\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Sheerer curtains act as dividers between tables<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted the cocktail bar to feel dark and intimate,&#8221; Gold told Dezeen. &#8220;So I thought a lot about desire, and its connection to the unknown.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Both [The Red Room and The Velvet and Silk Cafe] utilise curtains, essentially playing with the idea of concealing or obscuring something.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/03\/12\/peckham-palais-nightclub-nikjoo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/peckham-palais-nightclub-nikjoo_dezeen_2364_sq2_2-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Peckham Palais nightclub\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Peckham Palais nightclub reopens with &#8220;layered and atmospheric&#8221; interior\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upstairs at Hausu is framed by a series of different curtains. Heavy chocolate-coloured wool drapes run around the periphery of the space, complementing the deep-brown dado painted around the lower half of the bar&#8217;s white walls.<\/p>\n<p>Sheer voile curtains were suspended between a few of the wooden tables, creating cosy pockets of seating; these can be drawn back to accommodate larger groups if needed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2312746 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/upstairs-at-hausu-peckham-london-listening-bars-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Upstairs at Hausu bar in Peckham, London\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Music is fed through speakers that sit at different points throughout the room<\/p>\n<p>Speakers are dotted throughout the room to provide balanced, high-quality sound, with some mounted in the corners and larger models set on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>The space is softly illuminated by paper lanterns that dangle from the ceiling. Decoration was otherwise kept simple with potted plants and a slender metal shelf displaying vinyl covers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2312747 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/upstairs-at-hausu-peckham-london-listening-bars-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Upstairs at Hausu bar in Peckham, London\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Vinyl covers are displayed on metal shelving<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs at Hausu isn&#8217;t the only drinks spot to have recently landed in this corner of south London.
