UCL200 book celebration brings Student London to life<\/p>\n

UCL marked the publication of Student London: A New History of Higher Education in the Capital with a vibrant celebration, honouring a new book that places the student experience at the heart of London\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

\"Authors<\/p>\n

One of three flagship publications produced to coincide with UCL\u2019s bicentenary,\u00a0Student London<\/a>\u00a0is an engaging and critical account of life in the capital since the foundation of its first university in 1826. Authored by\u00a0Professor Georgina Brewis<\/a>\u00a0(Professor of Social History, Institute\u00a0of\u00a0Education)\u00a0and\u00a0Dr Sam Blaxland<\/a>\u00a0(Lecturer in Education,\u00a0Institute\u00a0of\u00a0Education), the book draws together institutional archives, Students\u2019 Union records, memoirs, oral\u00a0histories\u00a0and student publications to explore student life across two centuries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Tuesday 24 March, students,\u00a0alumni\u00a0and researchers gathered for talks\u00a0and\u00a0reflections\u00a0on the\u00a0diverse\u00a0stories and voices featured\u00a0in the book as well as live music from the\u00a0Students\u2019 Union Jazz Society.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

UCL President and Provost\u00a0Dr Michael Spence<\/a>\u00a0opened the event,\u00a0highlighting\u00a0the\u00a0central role\u00a0students have\u00a0long\u00a0played in shaping UCL\u2019s identity, impact and legacy\u00a0and thanking\u00a0the authors for their\u00a0unwavering\u00a0commitment to telling students\u2019 stories honestly and thoughtfully.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sequence of speakers\u00a0mirrored the book\u2019s\u00a0theme of continuity between past and present student communities. UCL alumna\u00a0Toni Griffiths<\/a>, who graduated in 1967 and was elected\u00a0Woman Vice President\u00a0of the Students\u2019 Union,\u00a0spoke\u00a0about\u00a0her\u00a0student experience and its lasting influence on her life. Her remarks offered a powerful reminder of the personal,\u00a0political\u00a0and transformative role UCL has played for generations of students.\u00a0<\/p>\n
