{"id":33975,"date":"2026-05-11T17:41:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T17:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/33975\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T17:41:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T17:41:12","slug":"uk-slaps-sanctions-on-dozen-people-and-entities-deemed-criminal-proxies-of-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/33975\/","title":{"rendered":"UK slaps sanctions on dozen people and entities deemed &#8216;criminal proxies&#8217; of Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Britain on Monday slapped sanctions on a dozen Iran-linked individuals and entities accused of involvement in \u201chostile activities\u201d by Tehran targeting the UK or other countries.<\/p>\n<p>The curbs follow a string of attacks over recent months against the Jewish community in Britain, and repeated warnings from officials that hostile states are intent on using proxies for such purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Updating its official sanctions list, the Foreign Office in London imposed the UK travel bans and asset freezes on nine people, two shadow banking exchange houses, and the allegedly criminal Zindashti network.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government had already sanctioned the network\u2019s alleged leader, Naji Ibrahim Sharifi-Zindashti, in 2024 alongside the United States, labeling him the head of an international drug and trafficking cartel.<\/p>\n<p>Zindashti\u2019s nephew Ekrem Abdulkerym Oztunc, a Turkish national, was among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-sanctions-iranian-targets-in-response-to-national-security-threats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nine people sanctioned<\/a> Monday by Britain.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The European Union sanctioned Zindashti\u2019s network last year, with London, Washington, and Brussels all claiming it is connected to Iran\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and Security and accusing it of conducting assassination and kidnapping operations against Tehran\u2019s critics.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20260510__B2E89ZM__v1__HighRes__IranUsIsraelWarDailylife.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3820610\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20260510__B2E89ZM__v1__HighRes__IranUsIsraelWarDailylife-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tAn Iranian woman walks past an anti-US and anti-Israel mural painted on a wall, in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on May 10, 2026. (Atta Kenare\/AFP)<\/p>\n<p>London also targeted five members of the Zarringhalam family, said to have helped finance efforts to \u201cdestabilize\u201d the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Mansour, Nasser, and Fazlolah Zarringhalam were sanctioned by the US last year for their involvement in Iran\u2019s \u201cshadow banking\u201d network.<\/p>\n<p>The US Treasury said the trio had \u201ccollectively laundered billions of dollars\u201d for Iran through a network of front companies in the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>London also added two US-sanctioned Iran-based exchange houses linked to them to its sanctions list.<\/p>\n<p>Iranians Nihat Abdul Kadir Asan and Reza Hamidiravari and Azerbaijani national Namiq Salifov were the other three individuals hit with the British travel bans and asset freezes.<\/p>\n<p>Sanctions come amid wave of anti-Jewish attacks<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis package of sanctions directly targets organizations and individuals who threaten security on UK streets and stability in the Middle East,\u201d UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said on Monday in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriminal proxies backed by parts of the Iranian regime who threaten security in the UK and Europe will not be tolerated, nor will illicit finance networks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, police said they were investigating possible Iran links to a recent series of arson attacks on Jewish targets in London, which prompted counterterrorism inquiries and warnings about hostile activity by Tehran or groups acting on its behalf. (Henry NICHOLLS \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>The regime-hostile Iran International outlet, based in London, was also targeted for arson, as was a memorial wall depicting Iranians killed by the Islamic Republic, along with Israelis killed by the Hamas terror group.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have suggested that Tehran may be behind some of the attacks, and a newly formed terror group \u2013 Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (HAYI) \u2013 has claimed responsibility for some of them.
