The 50-year-old hosts the station’s Weekend Drivetime show, discussing a range of topics from politics to current affairs. On Sunday, Hazarika, who has made several appearances on Good Morning Britain, played along after being called a “groomer” by Times Radio presenter Stig Abell, joking that it could even warrant a judge-led enquiry into her.

“I’m like an enabler,” Hazarika told Abell. He shot back: “Yeah, you are. A groomer!” Laughing, the political commentator replied: “A groomer! Oh my god. Just because I’m muslim. Stop it, honestly.” Joining in the humour, Abell quipped: “Don’t groom me! Don’t groom me, Ayesha,” mocked Abell. Hazarika continued to laugh, adding: “There will be an enquiry, a judge-led enquiry into me right now.”

Slamming Hazarika online, one fumed: “It’s awful that these presenters see the Pakistani rape gangs, one of the biggest scandals in Britain, as something to mock. If the races were reversed, Labour Peer Ayesha Hazarika wouldn’t dare laugh about it.”

Another posted: “@TimesRadio do you think that it’s appropriate to mock children who have been subjected to this on mass? I think you should investigate this.”

A third echoed: “The fact that they can even joke about something like this shows how repulsive and reprehensible they are. Ayesha is an absolute disgrace.”

A fourth weighed in: “Omg, I can’t say what I want to say because I would be cancelled. What a F Disgusting B. & the fella laughing who the hell is he, he needs to be named & shamed too!”

One X user jumped to the defence of Hazarika, saying: “The only thing she is laughing at is people like you that instantly call every Muslim a gang rapist btw… never made any joke at a victims expense. Oh wait, she’s a brown woman laughing, can’t have that now can we?”

One survivor told how an Asian described her as a “nice, young white girl” after attacking her. The Mayor of London was told the “patterns” of abuse in the capital are “very similar” to how girls were exploited in towns such as Rotherham, Telford, Oldham and Rochdale.

Khan is still facing growing criticism over his refusal to accept that grooming gangs operate in the capital.

Labour peer Ayesha Hazarika sparked fury after making a joke about grooming gangs on Times Radio.
