LONDON, May 12 (Reuters) – Nokia won an appeal to block London lawsuits by Taiwanese tech companies Acer and \u200cAsus on Tuesday in a case which is part of \u200ca global dispute over video coding technology.<\/p>\n
Acer and Asus had previously obtained a \u200bHigh Court declaration that a willing licensor in Nokia’s position would agree to an interim licence until the court decided the “reasonable and non-discriminatory” terms of a patent licence.<\/p>\n
But Nokia challenged that ruling \u200cand the Court of \u2060Appeal on Tuesday permanently “stayed” the cases, effectively ending the lawsuits brought against the Finnish technology company.<\/p>\n
A Nokia \u2060spokesperson said the ruling meant that a trial due to take place in June and July will not now proceed. Acer and \u200bAsus did \u200bnot immediately respond to requests \u200bfor comment.<\/p>\n
The Court of \u200cAppeal said that Nokia had offered a licence to Acer and Asus to use its patents on reasonable and non-discriminatory terms to be determined at arbitration, meaning their London lawsuits should not continue.<\/p>\n
China-based Hisense had also sued Nokia, but settled its case before \u200cthe appeal was heard.<\/p>\n
Disputes over the \u200bfair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms of \u200ba patent licence have \u200bfrequently led to global legal battles in the \u200ctelecoms industry.<\/p>\n
English courts can set global \u200bFRAND terms, following \u200ba landmark 2020 UK Supreme Court ruling, as can courts in China.<\/p>\n
Before Acer and Asus sued Nokia in London \u200bin June 2025, \u200cNokia had filed its own lawsuits in the United States, \u200bas well as Brazil, Germany and India.<\/p>\n
