{"id":34894,"date":"2026-05-12T18:45:54","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T18:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/34894\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T18:45:54","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T18:45:54","slug":"london-rooftop-where-beatles-played-last-gig-to-become-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/34894\/","title":{"rendered":"London Rooftop Where Beatles Played Last Gig to Become Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">To the thousands of Londoners who pass it daily, 3 Savile Row is just another townhouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Yet to Beatles fans, it\u2019s a place of pilgrimage: the former headquarters of Apple Corps, the band\u2019s record label; the place where the band recorded its \u201cLet It Be\u201d album; and the site where, one blustery Thursday in 1969, the Fab Four walked onto the roof and made their final public performance. It was a short set that ended when police officers pulled the plug.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Soon, members of the public will be able to visit that rooftop just like Paul McCartney and John Lennon did that day: Apple Corps announced on Monday that it is turning 3 Savile Row into a museum, scheduled to open next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The site will include \u201cseven floors of never-before-seen material\u201d from the company\u2019s archive, Apple Corps said in a news release. It will also house a re-creation of the studio where the Beatles recorded \u201cLet It Be,\u201d and give fans access to the roof, where little has apparently changed since 1969.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cEven the railings remain the same,\u201d Tom Greene, Apple Corps\u2019 chief executive, said in the news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Holly Tessler, an expert in Beatles tourism at the University of Liverpool, said that fans already flock to the address, which is one of two major attractions associated with the Beatles in London, along with the Abbey Road crosswalk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But fans can currently only stand outside and point up at the roof, Tessler said. \u201cVery few people have been inside,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cI\u2019d love to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Britain is home to other Beatles museums, including two in the musicians\u2019 native Liverpool, but those are not officially licensed by the band or Apple Corps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">When the band played its rooftop concert at lunchtime on Jan. 30, 1969 \u2014 as shown in Peter Jackson\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/11\/arts\/music\/beatles-get-back-peter-jackson.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cGet Back\u201d documentary series<\/a> and Michael Lindsay-Hogg\u2019s 1970 \u201cLet It Be\u201d \u2014 it was mostly businesspeople who came out to watch from nearby buildings after hearing the noise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI hope we passed the audition,\u201d Lennon joked afterward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">McCartney said in the news release that he had recently returned to the building to look around. \u201cThere are so many special memories within the walls, not to mention the rooftop,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cI\u2019m excited for people to see it when it\u2019s ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Although the news release plays up the good times that the band enjoyed in the building and its role in the creation of \u201cLet It Be,\u201d many fans associate that album with the conflicts that led to the Beatles\u2019 breakup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cMaybe we should get a divorce,\u201d George Harrison said in one moment captured in Jackson\u2019s film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Tessler said that \u201cit really was the period the wheels were coming off,\u201d but that the discord increased fan curiosity about that period of Beatles\u2019 lore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The band has once again been in the public spotlight in recent months, with hype building over the director Sam Mendes\u2019 plans to release four movies telling the group\u2019s story in April 2028. Those movies <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/01\/movies\/beatles-biopic-movie-cast-mendes-mescal-keoghan-dickinson-quinn.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are set to star<\/a> Paul Mescal as McCartney, Harris Dickinson as Lennon, Joseph Quinn as Harrison and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"To the thousands of Londoners who pass it daily, 3 Savile Row is just another townhouse.
