{"id":34949,"date":"2026-05-12T20:56:48","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T20:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/34949\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T20:56:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T20:56:48","slug":"norwegian-billionaire-forced-back-to-london-in-285m-deutsche-bank-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/34949\/","title":{"rendered":"Norwegian billionaire forced back to London in \u00a3285m Deutsche Bank dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tTuesday 12 May 2026 1:52 pm<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0|\u00a0\u00a0Updated:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tTuesday 12 May 2026 2:08 pm\n\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Deutsche-Bank-Restructuring-Plan-Costs-18000-Jobs-1161010554.webp.png\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Deutsche Bank is Germany's biggest lender.\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tDeutsche Bank has been chasing the billionaire for his debt for 13 years\t<\/p>\n<p>Norwegian billionaire Alexander Vik has been ordered to return to the City to be interrogated about his hidden assets during a 13-year-long legal dispute with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/deutsche-bank-hit-with-700m-lawsuit-in-london-by-former-executives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Deutsche Bank<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bank first sued the business mogul\u2019s company, Sebastian Holdings, in 2009 after the company suffered a series of losses on foreign exchange and equities trade deals during the 2008 financial crisis, ordering it to pay \u00a3203m in damages and 83 per cent of its legal costs, pushing the claim up to \u00a3285m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After failing to reclaim the firm\u2019s debt, the lender went after Vik instead, who was later convicted of contempt of court for lying about his understanding of the Turks and Caicos Islands-registered Sebastian Holdings in 2015 and for withholding information about the firm\u2019s assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The businessman, who moved to Monaco following the legal battle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/norwegian-billionaire-fails-to-overturn-conviction-for-lying-to-uk-court-in-285m-deutsche-bank-dispute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">failed to overturn the conviction<\/a> in February 2023, arguing that High Court judge Jane Moulder was wrong to convict him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Court of Appeal said today it has \u201cinherent power\u201d to force the magnate to return to London to be interrogated again because he was originally issued the order in 2015 when he still lived in London.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The court also struck out a previous decision blocking the bank from further interrogating the billionaire and said Vik \u201chas done everything in his power\u201d to avoid paying the debt he owes to Deutsche Bank.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied repeatedly about the whereabouts and nature of Sebastian Holding\u2019s current or former assets, and deliberately failed to provide key categories of documents,\u201d the court said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An \u2018important\u2019 decision for Deutsche Bank<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the initial 14-week trial, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/deutsche-bank-bets-250m-on-uk-fintech-abound\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Deutsche Bank<\/a> has made a number of repeated unsuccessful attempts to recover the debt owed by Vik.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lender had also successfully applied for Vik to be sentenced to prison for contempt of court after he lied in the 2015 examination, but failed because of a suspended sentence which ultimately expired.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis decision is an important one for Deutsche Bank as it continues to take steps to recover an outstanding judgment debt, and we are very pleased that the English court has reaffirmed its willingness to take robust action to ensure that Court orders are complied with,\u201d Fieldfisher partner Christopher Robinson, acting solicitor for Deutsche Bank told City AM.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The court will imminently issue an order for Vik\u2019s examination and will face a \u201cnarrower\u201d round of questioning from Deutsche Bank compared to its 2015 order.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/abramovich-foundation-trustee-has-links-to-starmer-advisor-powell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Abramovich foundation trustee has links to Starmer advisor Powell<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tSimilarly tagged content: <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSections\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCategories\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPeople &amp;
