Campaigners have criticized Ofcom for not\u00a0taking action\u00a0sooner.\u00a0The Molly Rose Foundation\u2019s CEO Andy Burrows welcomed the fine but said the process \u201chas taken an interminable amount of time.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMolly\u00a0Rose\u00a0Foundation\u00a0submitted\u00a0detailed evidence which showed scores of vulnerable young people remained at risk while Ofcom\u2019s investigation dragged on. Further lives were lost during this period,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Seven months\u00a0ago\u00a0the Molly\u00a0Rose Foundation in conjunction with Families and Survivors to Prevent Online Suicide Harms published\u00a0a\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0accusing both the government and the regulator\u00a0of dragging their feet and warned that even if Ofcom sought to block U.K. access to the site, this would amount to little more than \u201cregulatory whack-a-mole\u201d in the absence of improved legislation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

An Ofcom spokesperson said: \u201cWe share the urgency about the extreme harms that sites such as this can cause, and understand the anger felt towards them by those who have been so personally affected. Today we’ve made clear that this provider has failed \u2013 and continues to fail \u2013 to comply with its duties. Our investigation into this forum was the first to be launched under the Online Safety Act straight after it came into force.
