{"id":36018,"date":"2026-05-14T08:55:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T08:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/36018\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T08:55:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T08:55:10","slug":"angela-rayner-the-fiery-socialist-who-could-yet-rise-to-be-britains-prime-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/36018\/","title":{"rendered":"Angela Rayner: The fiery socialist who could yet rise to be Britain&#8217;s prime minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-NXV7BKOBPJAV3KU7TMLPQR64LQ\">Angela Rayner, the working-class poster girl who gave Keir Starmer\u2019s government the grit to balance out his middle-class barrister persona, has been cleared to run against her former boss to be Labour leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-W7K65V5WDZBFHJF4GSPJB6N5VI\">The former deputy prime minister, 46, has resolved the tax issues that have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uk\/2025\/09\/05\/angela-rayner-quits-uk-government-after-tax-scandal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uk\/2025\/09\/05\/angela-rayner-quits-uk-government-after-tax-scandal\/\">dogged her for the past year<\/a> and seemed likely to rule her out of standing in the race to replace Mr Starmer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-KDIHWO353ZHPFJQC4NVZNLTAYM\">She has said she will not trigger a leadership contest but will be ready to fight if Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigns in order to stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-IY2A52CMJFGM3JKITVBATKVIGU\">Ms Rayner has been MP for Ashton-under-Lyne since 2015, the first woman to hold the post in the 180-year history of the south Lancashire coalfield constituency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-6W47WZZY35EX7I36TVKSAEVOB4\">Popular among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uk\/2024\/06\/14\/on-message-angela-rayner-shows-labours-campaign-success-at-tv-election-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uk\/2024\/06\/14\/on-message-angela-rayner-shows-labours-campaign-success-at-tv-election-debate\/\">Labour grassroots<\/a> after a rise through the ranks and famous for hitting the campaign trail in platform trainers, she has built her reputation on her down-to-earth roots and her unconventional personal life. She has described her politics as &#8220;everyday socialism&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-SA3QPDQJBRHWVDSHXZF77IHXUU\">Born on a council estate in Stockport, near Manchester, in one of the UK\u2019s industrial heartlands, Rayner left school at 16, pregnant and with no qualifications and, in her own words, was told she would &#8220;never amount to anything&#8221;. She has said she had no books in her house growing up because her mother could not read or write. She became a grandmother at 37.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-IHV4JU2Z5VAVBGSSJP6CCD64JQ\">Her previous election campaign literature highlighted that she is \u201cnot an Oxbridge-educated, former special adviser, professional politician\u201d, nor did she have a privileged upbringing or attend university.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-46FXDP6OJ5HL5OKQIXGQNEX5DI\">Instead, she went to college and worked for the council as a carer for the elderly on zero-hour contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Workers&#8217; champion<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-L4XJ4LSVYZFFLEQRFPJBVUGYDE\">After becoming an MP, she was soon promoted to the shadow whip\u2019s office by then-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and became one of the party\u2019s most flamboyant front-benchers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-QFCRRVGCNJFNBDUO4SM5OPXND4\">After stints as shadow pensions minister and shadow education secretary, she was appointed deputy leader of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uk\/2024\/05\/23\/keir-starmer-lawyer-with-sights-on-power-after-leading-labour-revival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Labour Party<\/a> in March 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-AFSVFOJUTBC2BFXO6SPB2Z3M5A\">She has played a pivotal role in championing workers&#8217; rights and social justice, and frequently used her personal experience to help bridge the gap between the left-of-centre party and its traditional working-class base. She was credited with being instrumental in forcing a major U-turn on the UK government&#8217;s flagship welfare reform bill last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-XCM4SRVQFJEAROHLK3RC7BRSIM\">She formed a successful double act with Mr Starmer, who she has stored in her phone as Mr Darcy, the lawyer from Bridget Jones\u2019s Diary, with Ms Rayner acknowledging the straight-laced lawyer \u201csmooths off her rough edges\u201d. She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/world\/uk-news\/2021\/10\/28\/angela-rayner-apologises-for-scum-attack-on-tories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/world\/uk-news\/2021\/10\/28\/angela-rayner-apologises-for-scum-attack-on-tories\/\">forced to apologise<\/a> in 2021 after calling senior Conservative politicians &#8220;scum&#8221; during a party conference.<\/p>\n<p>Success story<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-WAQF3IBUWVALVCWV62FG76LHT4\">When her tax troubles first emerged he said it was a mistake for people to brief against her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-I6VHLUND2RHZ5IBSBCNIECWYM4\">Mr Starmer hailed her as a &#8220;great British success story&#8221; who would give &#8220;working-class children, particularly girls, a real sense of aspiration&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-3HNRDTE5EFEX3NE3BLCGDDPRS4\">&#8220;They will look at Angela and think, &#8216;I can do something like that.&#8217; What a brilliant thing. Angela came from a very humble background, battled all sorts of challenges along the way \u2026 one of the things that drives me about politics is that aspiration is an opportunity for people to go as far as their talent will take them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" type=\"image\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/media\/BWKkorUR\/poster.jpg\" width=\"279\" height=\"496\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Will Britain have its fifth Prime Minister in five years?<\/p>\n<p>Tax investigation<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-BUVZ3NDVANCA3MJREKHKT2IL4M\">Ms Rayner said on Thursday she was \u201crelieved\u201d she could \u201cget on with my job\u201d after HM Revenue and Customs cleared her of deliberate wrongdoing in an investigation over her tax affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-25-5HGGPMK3HFBLRMKFGZCA4L6HRU\">She quit the government last September over incorrect tax payments on a property transaction. Her former marital home in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, was owned by a trust benefiting her disabled son. The sale of her remaining 25 per cent stake did not cut all ties with the property in law. Thus she should have paid additional tax on her new property in Hove, as a second home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-26-I3W6QWNR2VGL7BIRXM2SO6SOWA\">She claimed she made a mistake based on legal advice she received at the time, that she did not need to pay the higher stamp duty rate reserved for second home purchases when she bought a seaside flat on England&#8217;s south coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-27-KIOT7A5QUVAYTBF257DWR7T3GQ\">She had said a conveyancer and two legal experts had all suggested the amount of the property purchase tax she paid on the home in Hove was correct. Following headlines about her tax affairs, she consulted a leading counsel, who found she was liable to pay a higher rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-28-E5TWAJHNERFQRDLXG6LFLNMVM4\">Ms Rayner then referred herself to the government\u2019s ethics adviser Sir Laurie Magnus, who investigated the case and reported within 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-29-IBRTWE7DVNEJJLS3RAMRY4CQA4\">He said it was \u201cdeeply regrettable that the specific tax advice was not sought\u201d and that she had breached the ministerial code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-30-EB2Q5SQBABFQRJFGAXUY2MEFDQ\">Announcing the case had been resolved without penalty, Ms Rayner told the Guardian the investigation had \u201cclipped her wings\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-31-HQGBD6TOEZCA3B47Z3A4A5ZM2Q\">The former deputy leader said: \u201dI welcome HMRC\u2019s conclusion, which has cleared me of any wrongdoing. I have been exonerated by HMRC of the accusation that I deliberately sought to avoid tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-32-4X7HOY45PFHTVHE7SWPBIDT4PQ\">\u201cWhen purchasing a home of my own with a mortgage, I did not own any other property and had no personal financial interest in the court-instructed trust set up to manage my son\u2019s financial award. I was advised by experts that I should pay stamp duty at the standard rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-33-QHYDWMTLARHQVKYJ34K77Y7AWY\">\u201cI set out to pay the correct amount of tax. I took reasonable care and acted in good faith, based on the expert advice I received, and HMRC has accepted this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-34-EPF55HA2BJHPLFQLR5X3VXPRBI\">\u201cI have always sought to act with integrity and I believe politicians should be held to high standards \u2013 that is why I resigned from government and co-operated fully with HMRC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-35-ONXG7ZSGDVCEZNQUATNAUP7KUE\">\u201cI wanted to ensure that I paid every penny that I owed and have done so.
