The two universities have signed an agreement as the first step toward bringing the institutions together from August 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.<\/p>\n

Under the proposal, Cranfield University would become part of King\u2019s College London, combining Cranfield\u2019s specialist postgraduate expertise in engineering, applied research and industry partnerships with King\u2019s broader interdisciplinary scale and international reach.<\/p>\n

University leaders said the merger would strengthen UK capability across areas including aerospace, advanced manufacturing, AI and robotics, clean energy, environmental science, health and life sciences, and security and defence.<\/p>\n

The combined institution would also span campuses in London and the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor, which the universities said would strengthen collaboration with industry, government and research partners.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK\u2019s universities are among our greatest strategic assets; engines of innovation, educators of future talent, and central to how the country responds to the challenges ahead,\u201d said Shitij Kapur, vice-chancellor and president of King\u2019s College London.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis proposed merger will bring together the complementary strengths of two institutions \u2013 both founded with a particular emphasis on service to society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kapur said the merger would create \u201cnew educational possibilities for students\u201d and \u201ca clear focus on working in partnership with industry and government to support national resilience\u201d.<\/p>\n

Karen Holford, chief executive and vice-chancellor at Cranfield University, described the merger as \u201can exciting proposition\u201d for Cranfield.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an intentional step, which brings Cranfield University\u2019s outstanding applied research, nationally important facilities, sovereign capability, and long-standing industry links to King\u2019s,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The universities said the merger would support ambitions to expand interdisciplinary research and strengthen teaching provision across engineering, technology, business and management education.<\/p>\n

The announcement marks the second significant university merger proposed in the UK sector in recent years, following the merger<\/a> announced by the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich in 2025.<\/p>\n

UK science minister Patrick Vallance said the combination of King\u2019s and Cranfield had \u201chuge potential\u201d for the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor and wider UK research and training capacity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will create a driver of innovation and growth, capitalise on the complementary strengths and specialisms of both institutions and increase access, capacity and resilience across teaching and research,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Vivienne Stern, chief executive of Universities UK, said the proposal reflected how institutions were adapting to changing national priorities.<\/p>\n
