today revealed a 40% year-over-year decline in study visa applications this April,\u00a0with\u00a08,900 international students applying to study in the UK, compared to 14,800 the previous year. <\/p>\n<p>The decline brings the total number of applicants from January to April this year down by 33% on 2025,\u00a0as stakeholders warn of worsening headwinds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of this is particularly challenging given that we also know that the refusal rate is higher now than it has been in the past\u2026 So, these numbers are optimistic,\u201d Nous Group director Nicholas Dillon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/nicholas-dillon-uk-aus_whats-that-another-month-of-home-office-share-7460611915552083969-kbhj?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAACkNIP8ByzJytFl5pIrzYZvshGPfGxcAb1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">commented<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The drop means application levels for the year to April are at their lowest point in five years, down by\u00a011% on 2024 when the government\u2019s dependants ban came into force.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"700\" from dependants are 86% lower than December 2023 before the policy came into effect, as continued declines in skilled workers and health care workers set the UK on track for another year of zero or <a href=\"https:\/\/thepienews.com\/record-fall-in-uk-net-migration-as-dependants-ban-bites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">negative net migration<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The figures precede the\u00a0Home Office\u2019s\u00a0upcoming release of\u00a0wider\u00a0Q1 visa data\u00a0expected later this month,\u00a0with stakeholders watching closely whether\u00a0high visa\u00a0refusal rates of Q4 2025\u00a0will continue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They come as it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thepienews.com\/ofs-english-universities-warned-of-over-optimism-as-a-third-face-deficits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">emerged<\/a>\u00a0a third of English universities faced deficits last year, with a new report from the regulator warning\u00a0of the risks of \u201cover optimistic forecasting\u201d of student recruitment, highlighting persistent global volatility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, it named geopolitical uncertainty, rising UKVI compliance regulations and negative global\u00a0perceptions\u00a0of the incoming international student levy\u00a0as factors contributing to dampening demand,\u00a0warning of the sector\u2019s continued dependency on international student income.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"ODk0LDksNjA=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestayclub.com\/get-in-touch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\"
