{"id":37086,"date":"2026-05-15T10:47:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T10:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/37086\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T10:47:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T10:47:08","slug":"uk-deployed-24-f-35s-to-the-middle-east-with-spares-for-only-12-aircraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/37086\/","title":{"rendered":"UK deployed 24 F-35s to the Middle East with spares for only 12 aircraft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n              Sign up for our newsletter and get our latest content in your inbox.\n            <\/p>\n<p>            <a href=\"#news-signup-form\" class=\"body-base text-jet bg-ocean hover:bg-stealth hover:text-white py-2 px-7 h-fit rounded-full\"><br \/>\n              Subscribe<br \/>\n            <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The UK Ministry of Defence is facing criticism after Parliament\u2019s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) revealed that Britain deployed a carrier strike group to the Middle East without sufficient spare parts to support its embarked fleet of <a href=\"https:\/\/aerospaceglobalnews.com\/tag\/lockheed-martin-f-35-lightning-ii\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"9045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II<\/a> stealth fighters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/LTNG-20251031-0333-0341-0153-Large-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"F-35 HMS Prince of Wales\" class=\"wp-image-40998\"  \/>Photo: UK Navy MoD<\/p>\n<p>The criticism follows newly published correspondence between the PAC and the MoD\u2019s Permanent Secretary, Jeremy Pocklington, concerning ongoing concerns over the <a href=\"https:\/\/aerospaceglobalnews.com\/news\/uk-raf-f-35b-defence-investment-plan-delay-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">UK\u2019s F-35 programme<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the committee, the UK deployed 24 F-35Bs aboard the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales during operations in the Middle East despite having afloat spares packs sized for only half that number of aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/LTNG-20251031-0333-0341-0233-Large-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"F-35 HMS Prince of Wales\" class=\"wp-image-41001\"  \/>Photo: UK Navy MoD<\/p>\n<p>PAC Chair Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown sharply criticised the logistics planning behind the deployment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the heart of any military planning is sound logistics. The UK sent an aircraft carrier with 24 F35 fighter jets on it to the Middle East \u2013 with not enough spare parts to support them,\u201d he said. \u201cTwelve aircraft spare parts packs were sent to service twenty-four aircraft, and it is no surprise that, as a result, spares had to be shipped out from RAF Marham to make up the difference. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an increasingly dangerous world, our military and the country need more than this half-baked approach from the MoD,\u201d Clifton-Brown continued. \u201cOur brave fighting men and women, before being sent into potential harm\u2019s way, must have absolute certainty that they are well-supported in their equipment, with clear and reliable supply lines. But this correspondence shows an entirely unacceptable incompetence that flies in the face of any kind of sensible planning from the Ministry of Defence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UK MoD admits F-35 deployment exposed spare parts shortfalls<\/p>\n<p>The criticism stems from <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/publications\/53035\/documents\/296474\/default\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">correspondence Pocklington sent in response to PAC recommendations<\/a> following the committee\u2019s earlier inquiry into the UK\u2019s F-35 capability.<\/p>\n<p>The Permanent Secretary acknowledged that lessons from the recent Carrier Strike Group deployment had informed the department\u2019s understanding of sustainment requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/LTNG-20251031-0333-0341-0221-Large-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"F-35 HMS Prince of Wales\" class=\"wp-image-41000\"  \/>Photo: UK Navy MoD<\/p>\n<p>The PAC has warned that the <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/publications\/49943\/documents\/269002\/default\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">UK\u2019s F-35 fleet suffers from low availability, support shortfalls, infrastructure delays, and capability gaps<\/a> despite the aircraft itself being regarded as highly capable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UK operates the short takeoff and vertical landing F-35B variant jointly between the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. The jets form the core of Britain\u2019s carrier strike capability aboard the Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. Britain has so far received 38 aircraft, with one lost in an operational accident.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UK F-35 corrosion problems deepen sustainment concerns<\/p>\n<p>The latest criticism also comes amid growing scrutiny of <a href=\"https:\/\/aerospaceglobalnews.com\/news\/royal-navy-f35b-florida-corrosion-inspections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">corrosion problems affecting British F-35Bs operating in maritime environments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier reporting revealed that Royal Navy F-35Bs had been sent to Florida for intensive depot-level corrosion inspections and repairs under the US Navy\u2019s Production Asset Inspection Requirement Tier II (PAIR II) programme.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1000w_q95.jpg-4-Large.jpeg\" alt=\"A Royal Navy (RN) F-35 Lightning II pilot debarks the aircraft after arriving at Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE). Instead, the UK must send aircraft to the US Navy\u2019s Fleet Readiness Centre Southeast in Jacksonville, Florida.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>PAC warns of \u201ccomplacent short-termism\u201d in UK F-35 programme<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/committee\/127\/public-accounts-committee\/news\/209940\/f35-fighter-jets-wings-clipped-by-complacent-mods-shorttermism-pac-report-finds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PAC has previously accused the MoD of \u201ccomplacent short-termism\u201d<\/a> in managing the F-35 programme, warning that delayed investment decisions could increase long-term costs and reduce operational readiness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Concerns have included shortages of engineers and maintainers, infrastructure delays at RAF Marham, and gaps in planned weapons integration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/LTNG-20251031-0333-0341-0194-Large-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"F-35 HMS Prince of Wales\" class=\"wp-image-40999\"  \/>Photo: UK Navy MoD<\/p>\n<p>Last October, Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, said:\u00a0\u201cThe F-35 is the best fighter jet this nation has ever possessed.
