On Saturday, May 16, a rally organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley Lennon, is taking place in Parliament Square. Ahead of the Unite the Kingdom protest, the Government has blocked 11 foreign nationals described by Sir Keir Starmer as “far-right agitators” from entering the UK.

It comes as Sir Keir Starmer accused Mr Robinson of “peddling hatred and division” and claimed “people across the country will understandably be frightened by what they may see today”. A second, separate protest, the annual pro-Palestine Nakba Day, is to march to Waterloo Place. Public Order Act conditions are being imposed on both marches and live facial recognition will be used as part of a protest policing operation for the first time. Moreover, some 4,000 police officers have been deployed to police the rallies.

Earlier this morning, LBC published an op-ed by Sir Keir in which, speaking about both marches, he said “voices of division will be loud”. He added: “They are a reminder that our values are not given but earned. And that each of us has a responsibility to affirm the respect and decency that binds us together. I know that many people across the country will understandably be frightened by what they may see today. Muslim and ethnic minority communities concerned by the “Unite the Kingdom” march. Jewish communities worried by the antisemitism that has too often accompanied demonstrations related to the Middle East.”

THIS IS A LIVE BLOG.
