{"id":38819,"date":"2026-05-16T23:09:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T23:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/38819\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T23:09:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T23:09:09","slug":"britain-takes-first-steps-on-journey-to-2040s-north-of-england-olympics-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/38819\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain takes first steps on journey to 2040s North of England Olympics bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tSunday 17 May 2026 12:01 am<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0|\u00a0\u00a0Updated:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSaturday 16 May 2026 2:17 pm\n\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-149377950-e1778936898829.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Getty Images logo against a blurred backdrop, representing global media and visual content services for editorial use\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tThe first steps have been taken to see Great Britain host the Olympics in 2040s\t<\/p>\n<p>The first steps have been taken to see Great Britain host the Olympics, in the North of England, for the first time since London 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The government this morning commissioned an \u201cinitial strategic assessment\u201d into the potential for the North of England to stage the quadrennial games in the 2040s.<\/p>\n<p>Though any decision to bid for the Olympics is down to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/britain-must-launch-no-brainer-2038-winter-olympics-bid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">British Olympic Association<\/a>, the government will scope out whether vast swathes of the North could collaborate to host the Games.<\/p>\n<p>It would be the first time Britain would host the Olympic Games outside of the capital, which itself has staged the tournament on three occasions.<\/p>\n<p>It follows successful multi-sport events in Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham in the form of the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p>The plans, announced by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, come as part of a wider so-called growth agenda and follows a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/kings-speech-red-tape-to-be-severed-to-help-britain-host-major-sports-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">King\u2019s Speech which included<\/a> a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/sporting-events-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Sporting Events Bill<\/a> that plans to cut red tape to help in the staging of global tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>Olympics back in Britian?<\/p>\n<p>And the announcement comes with plans of a \u201cStadium Regeneration Accelerator\u201d to help towns and cities across England develop \u201cpriority sports infrastructure development projects \u2013 such as stadiums \u2013 that can help deliver local regeneration and commercial growth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The UK will this year host the Women\u2019s T20 Cricket World Cup and European Athletics Championships, while the Home Nations will stage the Euros in 2028.<\/p>\n<p>The government, too, is backing bids to stage the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/what-price-do-you-put-on-london-2040-olympics-and-2029-athletics-meet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">2029 World Athletics Championships<\/a> in London and the 2035 Women\u2019s Fifa World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>North East Mayor Kim McGuinness described North of England Olympics plan as a \u201cglobal showcase, leaving a legacy of prosperity, unity and renewal\u201d, while Premier League chief Richard Masters said that \u201cnew and redeveloped stadiums will deliver over 100,000 extra seats for supporters, as well as thousands of new jobs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A statement read: \u201cInitial work examining whether the UK could host the Games for the first time since London 2012 will assess key factors such as potential cost, socioeconomic benefit and any bid\u2019s chance of success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/kings-speech-red-tape-to-be-severed-to-help-britain-host-major-sports-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">King\u2019s Speech: Red tape to be cut to help Britain host Euros and World Cup<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tSimilarly tagged content: <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSections\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCategories\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPeople &amp;
